  • Increase intake of fibrous foods such as beetroot, tomato, leafy vegetables, as either juice or boiled form helps bowel movement. Fruits such as papaya, guava, sugar cane, amla, raspberries, pear, orange, pineapple and grapes offer good relief.
  • Have a warm glass of milk with either ghee before bedtime, or drink warm water with honey at bedtime.
  • Warm water with half or full-sized lemon with a pinch of salt, every two to three hours, helps to cleanse the bowels.
  • Bael Fruit (Aegle marmelos) juice aids in effective bowel movement.
  • Store water in a copper vessel overnight, and drink on an empty stomach every morning.

Lifestyle Changes

  • Fresh fruits, vegetables and high intake of water are necessary for a healthy digestive system. Include four to five servings of fresh fruit & vegetables for higher fiber intake.
  • Movement, through walking or physical exercise aids digestion.  Practice Yoga postures, such as, Virasana, Adho Mukha Virasana, Supta Virasana, Pavanamuktasana, Janu Shirshasana works wonders for constipation.
  • Follow easy, yet powerful Mudras, such as, Vaayu Shaamak, Prithvi Shaamak, Jal Vardhak, Vaata Naashak, Apaana Mudra, Apaan Vaayu Mudra and Suchi Mudra for about 30- 45 minutes to get relief.
  • Deep breathing techniques such as Kapalbhati, Agnisar Pranayama, visceral and diaphragm breathing, tone the abdominal muscles for good digestion.
  • Relaxation methods with meditation ease the stress on the body and mind for a better functioning of the digestive system.
  • Avoid bakery, dairy and sugary foods that affect the bowels.
