Microwave idlis comes out good. But whenever you eat it you need to heat it to get the softness.

I bought it from rathna stores chennai 7 yrs back with no brand name on it. Whenever i eat idlis for lunch I heat it in MW. If you can't heat it, you can buy insulated lunch box in walmart, which can keep idlis somewhat warm.

You can buy small pyrex bowls called custard cups (they come in two sizes) and use them to get away from plastic. I used to make idlis in the steamer over my rice cooker using these....makes big size idlis.

It is a well known fact that raw food is more nutritious than cooked. Cooking food destroys nutrients, whether it's on a stove, or in the microwave oven. But microwaving food on high power can be more destructive than cooking on the stove. So if you use a microwave, use one with an inverter magnetron, and cook on low power. Cooking on true low power (not intermittent high) will greatly reduce the amount of damage done to the food.
Even on low power, I still don't know if a stove or microwave is worse.
    Happy Cooking :)

    Hi dear,

I understand with the early school timings we have to look for making it faster..Even i pack idlies for my DD.... But idlies cook fast even in steamer dear...hardly 5 to 7 mins...!you can also buy mini idly stands whcih cooks even faster...you get then in lulu, safeer etc. I got mine from Tamil sandhai at kharama in the resturants area where aapa kadai and restaurants are there..!

    hope this helps!!!
