Lawns-plants in shaded area - any suggestions/tips?

Hello everyone,
This forum is wonderful and very informative. I have some space all round the house in Kerala, India. We have a lawn in one portion and some plants. 2 sides have lot of sunlight but the other 2 sides get the shadow from the house so we cannot plant anything in this portion. Could anyone tell me whether I could have a lawn at the shaded area? What plants grow in the shade?
All your inputs are very welcome. Please suggest Indian names/pictures of plant so that I could go and get them.

For shade I feel the best are Hosta plants.. this has grown well for me.

I always go and visit the local nurseries and talk to the local gardeners and local people to get a better idea of what plants are available. And what plants would be suitable for shade. Just my opinion
