    Hello Ladies

In our hectic life style 24/7 we are less likely to realize that our breathing is shallow. We never pump enough oxygen to the lungs, which is necessary for the metabolism.

It is a known fact that proper breathing increases the rate of metabolism, which needs good supply of oxygen to the blood. While breathing we inhale oxygen that is supplied to all body cells, which in turn increases oxidation and burning of fat cells.

Breathing exercises apart from helping the body to loose weight, relaxes the mind and gives a sense of well being.

Breathing exercises gives the alternate stretching and compression to the stomach muscles. Breathing exercises massage the stomach, mobilizes the fat, makes it easier to burn off.

First develop the habit of deep breathing while walking, jogging, cooking, driving etc..

Lie down on the back, place the hands on the lower abdomen, inhale through the nose, expanding the belly to the maximum. Exhale with full pressure through the nose, contracting the stomach muscles. Repeat the exercise 25 - 30 times.

Sit in the meditation pose, relax the body, inhale through both the nostrils, hold the breath count up to 10 then exhale through both the nostrils. Repeat the exercise 50 times.

Sit in the meditation pose, relax the body, Keep the left hand on the left knee. Close the right nostril with the thumb and breath 10 - 15 times rapidly through the left nostril. Close the left nostril with the ring finger breath 10 - 15 times rapidly through the right nostril. Both inhalation and exhalation should be forceful and equal.

Sit in the meditation pose, relax the body, keep the left hand on the left knee. close the right nostril with the thumb and breath with the left nostril, now close the left nostril and exhale with the right nostril. Inhale with the same(right) nostril exhale with left. Keep repeating the exercises for about 15 minutes

Sit in the meditation pose, relax the body, keep exhaling forcefully counting up to 30 - 40 times. Relax and repeat the same, feel the stomach muscles contract and expand fast.

There are many more advanced breathing exercises to help reduce weight.

Well Ladies let's all take advantage of the breathing exercises to loose weight, be fit and happy.

    Hi,
I appreciate that you have written an article to insist the importance of breathing exercises to reduce weight. I'm not understimating your knowledge in this area, but I humbly would like to share my views on the article, definetely for awareness, and not to hurt anyone. I'm a Yoga Therapist(graduated from a yoga University), I'm just sharing with you, from what I have studied, researched and experienced.
1.First of all, a recommendation to "hold the breath", cannot be given just like that. Any one practising holding of the breath need to do it absolutely under a teacher or a Guru's guidance. One has to be very careful in practising holding of the breath, called as Kumbhaka in yogic terms. Kumbhaka need to be done with Bandhas. If you are interested Please find from the net what 3 Bandhas are.
2.Your recommendation for "rapid breathing" has a lot of limitations. We are more careful on who should not do rapid breathing, rather than, who should be doing it. It is better for a person not to do breathing exercises, rather than doing, what she should not do. Please do not instruct on any breathing exercise without first mentioning who should not do it.
    3. From your words "exhale forcefully", I think you are talking about Kapalabhati. What will happen if an enthusiastic obese person with hypertension, after reading the article starts doing it?. That too, generalised words like "relax and repeat the same"? Relax for how long? repeat for how many more times? 10 more? what will happen to a BP person? for an Epileptic person? for a severe backpain person?
All I'm telling is that, if anyone wants to reduce weight through breathing exercises, pls find out a right yoga teacher or a Therapist. Talk to the person, mention all your ailments, (if you have diabetes or knee pain or back pain, irregular periods, Thyroid dysfunctioning or whatever). Make him design a tailor- made, suitable program for you. Learn and practice CONSISTENTLY. It is really disheartening to see people practise yoga, reading from a book or a similar source. or most of the time, people go for general yoga classes which normally has more than 10 participants. The same asana, pranayama will be given to all of them, The same practices to reduce weight(obesity), to reduce knee pain(arthritis) too? How does it make sense? When it doesn't work people conclude that yoga doesn't work. General yoga is a positive health program for people who are healthy without any particular ailment. Go for Obesity Yoga Therapy , find out what you particularly need.
    Riyaa.

    Hi Riyaa

Thanks for the post. Good to know that you are a yoga therapist(teacher). I'm still a student, practicing yoga for past 3 years. My teacher at Vivekananda Institute of Human Excellence always lays stress on the importance of regulated breathing. It is a known fact that in 24/7 busy schedule breathing(proper) is the most neglected thing.

What you said was right, people with ailments should practice yoga under the guidance of a teacher.

    dear 4mango,
First let me thank you for this useful thread. I Lost the ability to sing suddenly and gradually I found very difficult to speak loudly. I have to strain much to talk. So I went for Stroboscopy ( My DIL is speech and hearing specialist) and they started some breathing excercise for me first. They are almost same like what you mentioned. They gave some breathing ex for stomach tightening which in return they said to retain my voice. I find my breathing much regulated than before and let me hope for getting back my voice again .

    Hi,
I admire your attitude. Thank you for taking my comments in the right way. Not everyone can take it with the right attitude like you. I'm also a learner. Nobody in this world can claim to have known everything. As we all know, life on the whole is full of learning experiences till our last breath. Glad to know that you are a regular yoga practisioner. Nice communicating to you. By the way the Institute you have mentioned, Is it associated to Swami Vivekananda yoga anusandhana samasthana (SVYASA), Bangalore?
    Riyaa.

    Hi Riyaa

I totally agree with you. People learn something everyday, and a lot of times it's that what they learned the day before was wrong. Learning is like rowing upstream. A pause is enough to throw us back. I do not have any idea whether both the institutes are related.

    Have a nice day dear.

    Hi Lalli

Thanks for the post. I agree with you, the three letter word 'ego' is the biggest enemy of humans. Believe me I'm still working it out. I have a long way to go and I'm happy on the way I keep meeting friends like Lalli, Riyaa, Ganges and many more.
