Hi bobbie, please mention the location in chennai where you will be staying or will be going for shopping. I don't think not all areas in chennai sell the mann paanai. I have seen vendors selling lots of different varieties of paanais and other chattis in Perambur, periyar Nagar, Purasaiwalkam, Kodambakam (near valluvar Kottam). Hope this helps. Will post if I come across any other areas.

    hi Angel,
As Lalitha says many places sell clay items, depends which part of chennai you will visit, my cousin got few pots from kodambakkam and they were good. i think u have to cure it before u start cooking orelse it will crack and break.
Can i know for what kind of recipes u plan to use it?

the curd set in clay pot is also very tasty itseems. i was planning to get small mud pots for curd but later, since i am sure my kids will break it now.

Revathi, you can pour or soak the mud pot (depending on the size) with the water thats either left over after boiling rice (kanji) or you can also use the water that is used to soak rice. Change the water every day or every two days. You need to keep doing this for a week or more so that the holes in the mud pot get closed and it gets cured. This is what I have heard. This is the same for curing store vessels (kallu paathiram) too. Hope other experienced ILites can throw more info and correct me if I am wrong.

I agree with lalitha, my granny does the same...leave it in water or rice stock (kanji) ...by changing the water then and then ...the process gets over in a week
