@Gauri03 long pepper and ginger is great for cold and cough. We have a chooran called thrikatu chooran( a mixed thri -3 katu -very hot) used for treating ashtma sinus and cold. They say a small pinch of the mixture of the powder and honey take. 40 days can help in keep respiratory infections at bay. Pregnant ladies don't try it.

    So what are the three.

    Dry ginger
    Long pepper and
    Pepper

Sundried well( pudam podarathu meaning they are dried naturally in sun and not artificially heated and the ones that are sun dried and crushed with a stone are best)

We use both the roots and the fruit of the long pepper/thipilli plant and even the fresh leaves.

The fruit ..looks like grains hence arisithippili

    The roots-kandathippili

The rasam or let us say soup is great during recovery

Fresh leaves are used to make a mild tea for cold and bodyache.

A poultice if thippili is applied on the forehead for relieving of headache but these days they dont as we get balms otc.

    Hi all,

Coming on here after a break. After one year of feeding my baby, I finally developed the dreaded mastisis. Waited for a few days and finally went to doctor and got antibiotics as expected. Being unwell and trying to eat healthy made me admire some of you even more, who cook through chronic pain and ups & downs!

Have been trying my best but the occasional ordering in has been happening.

Anyway today as well was too tired to cook but pushed myself. Made a 'bizzare biryani' with small portions of Knol khol, lauki, tomato, onion, cucumber, moong Dal, barnyard millet and whole garam masala spices. Also cooked this in some old home-made cultured butter (really made it so tasty) for added probiotics and sipped on buttermilk for more good gut bacteria to counter antibiotics.

Anymore natural probiotics found in ordinary Indian kitchens? Off late I have been reading that our Indian homemade pickles also have guy friendly probiotics... What do you think about this?

Writera, sauerkraut is supposed to be very rich in probiotics and is very easy to make at home. Love the sound of 'bizarre biryani'. :)

@Writera that would hurt a lot. Our pickles definitely have probiotics. Especially mavadu and amla and some pickles that are soaked in curds.
Our fermented idli, dosa should also get into the list.
The best i feel is this tip our english teacher asked us to do when we were i. 6th i believe. Cook rice by 4 in the evening allow it to cool. Add milk, culture and water , mix and allow it to rest . Eat it in the morning before coming to school. I think he did have a point

And yes saurkraut.. and wrap some cabbage leaf around the breast suppose to help. If you can handle jasmine they are age old remedies for helping reduce the swelling. Crush them baste them and tie a guaze to keep them on. And take some warm compress..
