Am 71, male and definitely a non cook. Can manage to cook rice. The wife leaves the fridge full of longer lasting dishes like vattal kuzhambu and gojju along with sambar and rasam for two days whenever she has to be away, which is rare. I avoid eating out.
When kids came from the US for a visit a few years back, they were feeding the stray dogs of the neighbourhood with bread and chappatti. The day after they left I saw this contingent of half a dozen strays waiting.
Fed them the balance of rice. Next day I bought some IR8 rice, cooked it, mixed with curds and laid out what I thought was a feast.
Every blessed one of the mutts took one sniff, gave an audible snigger (one even yowled), turned their back on the food and left, leaving me and the delighted wife with no doubt of what they thought of my cooking.
Even after all these years my wife never forgets to rub my nose in my first essay in cooking.

Post Script: Now I cook the meal with rice, jaggery and a spoon of turmeric. Add curds and all collected left overs of visiting babies' food if any. The dogs just love it. Practice makes perfect.

Such a wonderful post, brings back the memories...

I first cooked Rasam when I was in my 8th standard, I did not know how to but just gave it a try. My mom was away for two days, so I took this opportunity to cook for my dad, brother and me.. My dad ate first and he said it was nice, when I tasted it, I could not swallow it, I dint know what was wrong. Later one day when my mom was preparing rasam, I saw her adding tamarind juice to it and only then I realized what I missed.

    My first trial in kitchen

Every women is not a born cook , To become a good cook she should face lot of mistakes lot of trials etc,:bang but remembering our first attempt of trial in our kitchen will definetly bring a little smile in our face.:)

I like to share my first trial in kitchen:crazy

I remember when i was 12 , my mom and my aunt went to native for a marriage my mom left me with my uncle and cousin. my journey in cooking starts there.

it was 8 in the morning ,I thought to prepare dosa for breakfast i went to the kitchen searched and took the flour container i found it was so thick so i poured some water , u all may think " yes u r right" i have taken a right decesion but wrong quantity, yes i poured large amount of water and mixed it well ,then i poured the floor in to the hot pan ,what a pitty ,all flour run away in different directions and settled in the corners and so till that i havent watched dosa like that, I tried to spread it with the help of karandi all the flour got struck in my karandi oh my god, :confused2:

Seeing all this , my two testing cats(my uncle and cousin):hide: ran away silently and bought me breakfast from hotel.

I remember this whenever people say i am a dosa specialist and asks for the tips .

IL's i know many of us will have such experiences please do remember to share urs.:cheers

My learning phase was good, but now I think it has dwindled.
