Hi all, My daughter is 4 yrs old and going to school. She is good at learning, can write the alphabets , and learnt easily. But the problem is with writing in four line book. She is not able to get the idea of writing in a four line copy. She gets confused with the lines and writing wrongly in between the lines. We practiced her a lot, but not improved yet. Is it a defect? How can we follow some techniques to improve this ? Please reply
Hi Aswathy, Your DD is just 4 years old,I don't think its a problem. She'll get the hang of it,each child is different ,right? Even though in a 4-line ,2 lines are in blue/violet and the other 2 lines are red..kids do get confused. Why don't you start with a two-line page for now? Then you can introduce the 4-liner. Or you can go to the site activityvillage.co.uk and get the dotted line and get printout of the same. There are many websites which provide free sample for handwriting practice, just google and get the one which is suitable for you.
Dear Racr, Thanks a lot. Actually we also felt that four line writing is little heavy for a 4 year old, but in School, they started practicing it. And teachers say us that she is not able to get the idea of the four line concept and tells us to practice it daily. I am little worried about it because, my kid will start crying as soon as we tell her this topic.
Aswathy, writing between lines requires wrist control. That takes a while to develop...she is exhibiting age appropriate skills. One way to encourage wrist isolation is to write on a vertical surface. Encourage her to rest her wrist on the wall surface as she writes or paints. This will make her move her wrist naturally instead of moving her whole arm. *Tape newspapers on the wall and on top of this tape poster paper or chart paper...give her some paints/brushes and let her explore... *tape writing paper on the wall and ask her to write a shopping list...she can even draw the items to make a list so she doesn't have to work on spelling, etc. *SHe can write a thank you note to someone (if you write the words on a piece of paper and she can copy the letters...) These dont have to be done on lined paper...you are working on only the wrist isolation part...controlling within lines will come automatically if this isolation happens. *Tape a colored chart paper under a table or chair. Kids love this placement coz it is so odd...just make sure the table/chair is at the right height so she doesn't have over extend her arm to reach the paper. Let her lie down under the table/chair and make a greeting card. *Give her small pencils..should be short because it encourages better grip. Try not to use the fat crayons/markers.
aswathy, it is actually the best way to teach your child to write. the reason for having a four ruled writing pages is to allow the child to learn how to mark the h and g..that they h top should touch the first line on the four ruled and the g on the bottom..or they look like n and a in cursive. it takes time for the child to learn/master it. how about printing four ruled on color paper, with pictures or something, that would interest her to learn instead of the plain old school page format.. teaching her that h has to reach the top line and g has to touch the bottom line in a funny way . And do check how she holds her pencil, the grip also plays a pivotal role in writing.. Check out preschool worksheets..adapt them to four ruled.. and if your dd loves coloring, make it coloring the alphabets and that can be done only if she follows some rules..write them as they should in the lines..and then she can color.. appreciate her if she does it this way..and be patient..some children have better motor skills while others take some time to develop..but do encourage her to try it.. Check out these ideas..and do make it four lined before you print, so as not to confuse her... Nothing to worry about it.. Which school is she studying?.. I heard that most of the schools in Bangalore would practice only the kids 5 and above to write.. My sister's son and neighbour's kids started to write after 5 only.. and they are writing very neatly.. once the required maturity / understanding level comes they will do them self.. Please let me know which school?
Hi, Thanks a lot. She is studying in JGRVK. School is good and I am happy to say that she has improved a lot now. Now she writes very neatly and she loves to do it. the
