We have all seen jerks in our workplaces. Those individuals who are focussed on getting their work done without regard for the feelings of co-workers. They shameleslly take credit for work that they have not done, work late just to put up a show and are arrogant to people who are not helping them get ahead. They sweet-talk bosses in ways that are utterly irritating to an onlooker. But the surprising thing I am finding is that these people are being promoted and are getting ahead. What are we nice people - who put in a good day's work - doing wrong? How are bosses completely blind to what is so visible to us? Shakila
It is all about creating the image to the people who are incontrol of their career. These "jerks" know that if they offend the coworkers or steal their credit, they can get away with it as long as they are in the good books of the higher management. So they use this to promote their career. I would call this a failure of the management and the companies policies which let these "jerks" get away with such behavior.
