Chitra mam After seeing your floating lamps even I regret that I was not able to take some lamps from India.. well, I got only 2 days notice to start to US for a long term assignment and with so much shopping & packing , the lamp never came to my mind. It was only after I came here , a few days later I realized I missed them....I have planned to purchase one on my next visit to India.. Thanks!
dear chithra mam, saw this post only today but thank u so much for the information...i do light the lamps everyday but have unerstood the significance only now...Now will do it with more reverence... Mindi
Dear Mindi, My very idea of writing these posts is for everybody to know the significance of many things we do on a daily basis, more mechanically than with understanding. Love, Chithra.
I noted down the slokas after reading the significance and was reading out off the paper after lighting the lamp. Today to my astonishment, even as I took the match stick - my mouth started "deepo jyothir..." and I went all the way without the paper. To say some sloka and understand its meaning is definitely a pleasure. wow!! First things I did today was think about you and thank you dear Chithra. Regards, Priya
Dear Priya, If you can think of me for a second in Swami Sannadi, I do not ask for anything more! Thanks. Love, Chithra.
Dear Ma'am, I do light it before dinner. But I got into a debate with someone, who said, we can light the lamp at any time and that there is no "sastram" which says we cannot light the lamp after dinner. So I want to know if there is any scripture which says when we should light the lamp. Bhanu
Dear Chitvish mam I came across the thread just today and thanks for the lovely post and information.. Hope your DIL has recovered now.. Lighting a lamp gives such a peace and divine feeling.. I love it when the light of the lamp and the smell of the agarbhathis cover up the whole area.. But yes.. I have some unanswered questions about this.. 1. Is it that the lady of the house only should light the lamp? 2. Can we use the mordern lamps for Diwali, that are made of wax... I have a school for special children near my house.. Their, they are taught to make candles too.. last year I had gone there and came to know about this and I was so moved away by their work.. and bought them immediately, though I was not sure of if I can use it.. I am also posting the pics that were taken
