Only the parents should decide. They can take suggestions but they should be free to choose whatever they want.

SGBV, at least u have the guts to change ur son's name legally and ur dh hav supported u.
for my first son, we wanted to name him as per our liking. but pil consulted their favorite priest and he came up with a name. he didnt do any checking and just simply named our son based on his star, bharani. and i have keep telling my pils that my son was not born under bharani but aswini. no one listened to me, they said their priest wudnt have made a mistake.
but my son's first year birthday, i consulated the same priest myself to check the date for the prayers (ayusha omam) and he himself had admitted that he made a mistake. he overlooked my son's birth time 4.45am to 4.45pm.
then i asked my dh when i told u all u never listened to me, so now shall i change the name from bharani to ashwin? pil said the name suited him well so just leave it.
same thing happened to my bil's baby gal who borne 1 1/2 mths later. they wanted to name her as per their liking but again pils consulted their favorite priest and he gave them a name. at first bil insisted to have their chosen name but mil was adamant. she said u can call her as per ur name, but we all will call her by this name only.
for this issue also my sil interfered and made a fuss and at last bil accepted my pil's chosen name. sigh sigh sigh***

oh forgot to addd. sil gave birth 10 mths later as she named her son as per HER own liking. she did the numerlogy calculations herself and named his son with the name that we WANTED TO NAME OUR SON INIATIALLY!!!!!
she didnt ask her dh or her PIL's suggestions. when i asked mil how come sil can make her own decision but im not allowed to do that (stupid me to ask mil innocently), mil said she is married and belongs to another family redi, so she cant interfere on her son's naming and its sil's and her dh decision on whom to name their own son.

Surely your ILs won't see his (her?) birth certificate... So, say you have two names for the child. One to call him by and one for formal matters. And call him by the name you chose - call it the pet name. And in the birth certificate give the name you chose, so that he'll be called by that name in school etc. With grandparents/ for temple purposes, you can use that other old fashioned name...

So, how would it matter to them? They won't know so much about the school environment; no? Just don't tell them about the birth certificate. another reason you can give to call by "pet" name is that it doesn't feel respectful to keep saying your ILs names...

Little tact and you get your way...

Another thing to do is to use two names. First name as the one you chose and the second name as your IL's preference but in the documents, make the second name as just the initial so that your poor child doesn't have to write out a handful of letters in every form...

The problem is not PIL, but the husband who is not yet ready to take a charge. During my first kid's birth time, my husband was none other than a pet of my in laws. He only knew how to dance as per their tunes, and how to convince me afterwards either by blackmailing (anger show up) or being too innocent.

Now he has learnt some lessons, that not only his parents, but his wife too has this nerve that reacts against such stupid acts.
He is equally concern about my anger and reactions, so he weigh them both, and decided to keep quite. This helps.

He had no choice, since the name has been chosen by BOTH OF US after spending too much of time to make it sound not so religious (ours is inter religious marriage), and we almost started talking about our son with that name only (when he was inside my tummy)

ONLY parents. My PILs had a huge fight with hubby and me right after delivery as they did not like the name we chose, and wanted to go by numerology, astrology, etc. My MIL only named both her sons, none of her inlaws did, and she wanted to name my son. How is that even fair?
Atleast for this, my hubby stood firm and our son is named as per our wish!
