We lived in Decatur area for several years. Weather in GA is like Northern India (warm and humid mostly). It snows sometimes but not every year. I would say weather is pretty mild. Texas in my opinion was much warmer (only lived for a short time in Dallas).

we didn’t have kids then and main consideration was proximity to work. I did buy a condo there but most of our time there we lived in apartment.

I am in Atlanta for 5 years now. We really liked it. It doesn't snow here. May be few hours or minutes of snow flurries for a day or two in the season. That's it. Weather is very good.
Schools are good in suburbs. Alpharetta, dunwoody, cumming have good school counties.
I don't have a house here. So don't know about the housing and it's benefits/drawbacks. I am living in an apartment and planning to buy a house soon.
It's good weather to do gardening. In our community, we have a common garden area allocated to every apartment. People have their own space to do gardening. It's difficult only in the winter months. Winter is not long as North. Good luck with your move!!
