Poll topic for August 26th 2007 to 1st September 2007

This week poll topic is on a serious note.

An awareness about the diseases that threatens the women is very important as it helps her a lot. With proper guidance and resources, a women with such awareness could nib the disease at the earliest stage where precautionary steps could be taken. She could also guide her friends and relatives when asked for help.

Ladies, do take up the initiative to know about the disease that threatens us the most. Knowing about the symptoms of such diseases could go a long way in early diagnosis and life saving.

Though this poll topic is on serious note, nevertheless you could share your views on this topic.

    Dear Laxmi,

Thank you for bringing up this serious issue that all women should be aware of. Generally our mentality is to ignore all this till we/family members fall victim. This should change and a general awareness should be created.

My mother has Osteoporosis (well, even I did not pay much notice till she was diagnosed with this disease; still better late than never!). It is under control with some medication from Himalaya drugs. The good thing (!) about this disease is that it can be prevented if we take some care/precautions early on. Some of the things I have been told are:

    1) Do regular exercise atleast 5 days a week - could be brisk walking, swimming , aerobics, etc. Yoga ofcourse has lots of benefits - it even helps to tide over menopause.
    2) Consume food / drinks rich in calcium - the intake of calcium through the supplements is less than through natural food. While we compel our children to drink milk, we should make it a point to have atleast 2 glasses / day.
    3) During and shortly after nursing tne baby, take calcium suppliments regularly.

There are tests which can be done to detect osteoporosis - Based on bone mass index. You can get this checked if you feel you have weak bones. I have found Himalaya Drugs in Bangalore to have a support / research group for Osteoporosis.

Look forward to seeing preventive tips on other diseases too.

    Take care

    Cheers,

    Sumathy

Recently there was a article on heart attacks in hindu.

Heart Attacks. the chance of surivival for men is more than women in case of heart attack.Women are less likely to survive heart attacks than men. No one knows why. It may be that women don't seek or receive treatment as soon as men. Or it may be because women's smaller hearts and blood vessels are more easily damaged. Doctors are working on finding answers to these questions. There's no question, however, that it makes sense to prevent heart problems before they start.

    Symptoms:
    • Eat a healthy diet. Cut back on foods high in saturated fat and sodium (salt) to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Ask your doctor about how to start eating a healthy diet.
    • Control your blood sugar if you have diabetes.
    • Exercise. This sounds hard if you haven't exercised for a while, but try to work up to at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise (that raises your heart rate) at least 4 times a week.
    • Lose weight if you're overweight. Your doctor can advise you about the best ways to lose weight.
    • Control your blood pressure if you have hypertension.
    • Know your family history. Having a father or brother with heart disease before age 55, or a mother or sister with heart disease before age 65, are factors that contribute to heart disease. Inform your doctor about your family history.
P.S. I am a heart patient. From experience, go for your regular check ups, follow your doctors instructions, keep your family educated on you ecg/reports and other instructions. Never miss your medicines. time management is most essential for all treatment. be stress free. be happy.:2thumbsup:. After the age of 35 go for a annual check up. make it a gift to yourself. believe me that is the best gift you can give yourself.

    Hi laxmi,

Sometimes, small things go unnoticed when you are a mother,wife,dil,mil..... you forget that you are a human being who could be sick. we neglect the symptoms.... just think ok.... will go for a check up later... I have seen it happening in lot of households.

If at least few people take this pointers and take care of their health, i will think my coming out and declaring my heart condition has solved a purpose.

We all are under the myth that we may not get any of these diseases until we reach menopause. today you do not know,..I got my heart condition when a cyst broke in my stomach...what do i say it was not in the uterus..not inside the ovaries...so for want of a better term....and my heart went into a shock....and also half the blame on family history and at the age of 32.

So my advice to all those who are taking medicines for diabetics,bp,or anyof the similar conditions, never stop your medicines when u think it is under control... these are all conditions where you are safe if you continue medications lifelong with the advice of your doctor. If you are above 35 gift yourself a full women's check up on your birthday or any such occasion..

Health is wealth. Dont learnt it the hard way... understand that when you have the chance ... my 2 cents.....

I read in one of the mags that more women are affected by cancers of the breast and cervix.
We have to have regular health checkups.Self examination of the breast can be done at home.If you detect a lump or change in the nipple you always checkup.Pap smear is to be done every year after 40 and if it is normal it can be done every 2 years.Mammogram is to be done every year after 40.If you find anything unusual during your periods,it is always better to check.
Ovarian cancer is also on the increase.Four symptoms -bloating,pelvic pain, frequent or difficult urnination, feeling full quickly or having difficulty eating are the warning signs.Median age at diagnosis-63,but the disease can affect women of all ages.
It is advisable for women to have yearly health checks to prevent ,.O n women's day most of the clinics offer special rates. It is better to set apart some money for our health checks.Health is wealth.

Each year 17 million people (nearly the population of Mumbai) die of cardiovascular disease. Dr.Hilary J Powers, Professor of Nutritional Biochemistry at the University of Sheffield says that cancer and cardio-vascular diseases have a great deal to do with our environment. This is known from studies of groups that have migrated from Japan to Australia. Over a generation people have started to adopt incidents of chronic diseases in the new host country. Environment influences are huge and food, alcohol, smoking, energy expenditure are major causes for cardio-vascular diseases.

The answer is a healthy diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, cereals including rice and wheat and low in saturated fats like ghee and butter is. A sedentary population faced with Westernised diet is inevitably going to show an increase in the diseases of the West.
