It is saddening and disheartening to find that in recent days doctors, nurses and hospitals are subjected to violent attacks resulting in extensive loss of property and mortal injuries and in some cases police arresting hospital employees and registering cases against them for deaths and injuries associated with treatment in some cases. Complications arising in the course of treatment is not unknown. But in recent days every complication is viewed . as negligence by hospitals and medical personnel and relatives take law into their own hands and cause damage to personnel and property.
Excepting a few large hospitals which have a strong security system, large number of middle level and lower hospitals and personnel functioning there are stressed up and hesitant to undertake serious cases.
What has caused this unpleasant change in the field of medicine?

    Dear Gopalan Sir,

At present, healthcare industry in India is not regulated and it causes significant concerns among people about the quality of treatment they get in the hospital. Moreover, movies are made showing the physicians and hospital owners as greedy individuals who have a network to promote their business and sometimes give treatment even to a cadevor. There are some who have clean heart to provide high-quality service while others are operating under financial pressure get into devious methods to increase revenue or reduce cost.

Now every family has at least one person in the US and they see where the physicians and the hospital are accountable under Medical Malpractice. But people forget that the cost of healthcare in the US is the highest in the world. Slowly, the Indian healthcare is probably moving towards the US health system and its standards while continuing to maintain its individuality as zero payer system. Payer system is negligible in India except a few hospitalization benefits underwritten by a handful of insurance companies. Once it moves into a complete payer system with every health problem covered under the medical insurance premium, the cost of healthcare will begin to grow up and up.

The least the government should do, is to regulate the health systems and hold them accountable for some minimum standards that would help the hospitals and physicians to comply and explain the standards before providing service to the patients.
