    WE EXIST BECAUSE WE CONSUME

It’s festival times. Durga pooja and Dussera, Kara Chauth, Diwali etc are close by. There is whole lot of items on offer for purchases for consumption or gifting. Every other fellow is out shopping one thing or the other. The discussions are somewhat on the pattern of if you are not shopping you do not exist. News papers have reported that after some initial hiccups shoppers are back, damn the inflation. Gold prices are touching Rs.30000/- per ten grams and Silver Rs.50000/-kg but the jewellary stores are overcrowded. In some popular outlets there are queues.
People are replacing old Cars, TVs, Music Systems, Mobile phones and Computers with new and latest. New clothes, new utensils, new kitchenware, new curtains, new furniture, just about everything.
And it is not only the rich or upper middle class. People under BPL are also out in huge numbers to make their presence felt in the shoppers’ mania. Almost everything is available on credit. Not only that you are awarded bonus points if you buy on credit cards. For high value items banks are nudging each other to have the share of the pie.
Gone are the days when shopping was limited to city stores only. Now people are going overseas for shopping. Dubai and Singapore are on top of the list.
All discussions finally come around “how is your festival shopping going on’. Ladies in particulars are exchanging notes as what item is available where and cheap.
WELL FOLKS IF YOU DO NOT CONSUME YOU DO NOT EXIST.

Indeed we do, and therefore we do.

This is the season when Nobel prizes are announced. Couple of years ago, in 2016, a fellow who discovered, described the molecular mechanism of Autophagy was awarded the Nobel prize in Physiology & Medicine.

Our bodies have a stabilizing (homeostasis) mechanism that makes it consume and renew itself, and thereby exist in a healthy state. Shopping and renewal by microeconomic actors contribute to macroeconomic stability ?

Autophagy is a normal physiological process in the body that deals with destruction of cells in the body. It maintains homeostasis or normal functioning by protein degradation and turnover of the destroyed cell organelles for new cell formation. During cellular stress the process of Autophagy is upscaled and increased.
"During cellular stress the process of Autophagy is upscaled and increased." <== This is like finding your washing machine on the blink, and rushing to the shop to buy a new one.

Thanks for your first and should I say being on the same time zone, perhaps.
Yes needs demand refill. But then at times there is something called impulsive buying or compulsive shopping. hahahahahahaaa

Shopping happens to reverse the deterioration and the slide into a grim, functional, and boring existence. When shopping stops, or made to stop, one would age, become dull and staid, and life would cease.

Autophagy - An Emerging Anti-Aging Mechanism
    Abstract
Autophagy is a cytoplasmic catabolic process that protects the cell against stressful conditions. Damaged cellular components are funneled by autophagy into the lysosomes, where they are degraded and can be re-used as alternative building blocks for protein synthesis and cellular repair. In contrast, aging is the gradual failure over time of cellular repair mechanisms that leads to the accumulation of molecular and cellular damage and loss of function. The cell’s capacity for autophagic degradation also declines with age, and this in itself may contribute to the aging process. Studies in model organisms ranging from yeast to mice have shown that single-gene mutations can extend lifespan in an evolutionarily conserved fashion, and provide evidence that the aging process can be modulated. Interestingly, autophagy is induced in a seemingly beneficial manner by many of the same perturbations that extend lifespan, including mutations in key signaling pathways such as the insulin/IGF-1 and TOR pathways. Here, we review recent progress, primarily derived from genetic studies with model organisms, in understanding the role of autophagy in aging and age-related diseases.
