I have been advised VDRL and PGBSL tests (blood tests). Does anyone know what these tests are about? What exactly are these tests for?

    hi,

The VDRL test is a screening test for syphilis.
this is a sexually transmitted disease and can cause congenital abnormalities in the new born.
this is done to anyone who is pregnant .

PG BSL : BSL here may stand for blood sugar level .
    is it PP BSL????

September, thanks for your reply. VDRL is what you said. If the lady has contracted Syphillis then the baby may have problems and needs to be treated in time.

PGBSL is a Blood Sugar Level test done two hours after taking Glucose. They need to see how high the pregnant lady's blood sugar level may shoot up to be prepared for the delivery and so this test. You have to take 2 glassfuls of glucose and wait for two hours before your blood is extracted for testing. You may take water but have to fast otherwise (no solids/ beverages, etc.)

I thought I will post this info for the benefit of others who may need this in future .
