Video subtitles ? Aren't they done by voice transcriptions (dictation) software? There are plenty of these in subtitles of movies too. In more critical places where dictation software is used (like medical records) there are similar mistakes too; but the people can process it by contexts.

In general, language teachers feel a greater pain at these mishaps, than the general layabouts. I want to spell it Baer and could never understand how the last e can manipulate the front end's sound. Like tail wagging dog. Only by making rational mistakes, can a language improve. Someday, all of England would be using the spellings that Indian English speakers use. After all, dictionaries will tell what is the way it is usually done, as well as what used to be prescribed. The way how we don't use Chaucer's spellings anymore.

Abolishing homophones isn't possible. They have equal rights to exist.
You cannot force a population to use workaround synonyms for all words that sound like some other. If this is forced, we'd be speaking mostly in multisyllabic words only.

During Britishers time in Madras Presidency, an orthodox Brahmin clerk, after having exhausted normal leaves wondered how to bluff something unique and get leave sanctioned.

He submitted request leave letter stating, “as Shukrawar is falling on coming Friday, I may kindly be granted leave for that day” . Britisher boss thought , it was something religious and felt if leave is denied it may hurt religious sentiments and so wrote on the margin “sanctioned”.

The clerk was glad and for next future occasion, when he desired leave, used other days of the week namely Mangalwar, somvar, budhvar, guruvar & shanivar.

Later when Britisher checked up with another Brahmin clerk in the branch office and learnt that the “those” names are not “hindu festivals” but only Hindi names for days of the week. The he taken the cheating clerk to task and disciplinary action.

2. Since India is already a part of global village & recognised as superpower and member of nuclear club, the international sign language adoption would be considered more beneficial. Seafarers taught to use the internationally recognised sign language and it is used in navy too. I learnt some cardinal principles while I was in NCC during first year in BSc & Engineering as well in 1962-64 when it was compulsory for first year students. We were told learning signs useful during rescue operations following huge accidents air disasters ship wreckage and Force Majeure or Act of God.

In Every Indian home, especially in rural India, the first word uttered & first language spoken by a baby is in mother tongue and many rural mothers speak only “her” mother tongue and there the teaching in a language commences. When bubbly babies return every day from school speaking several words with enriched vocabulary - mother is delighted and able to enlarge it easily only with use of language(s) she knows. In numerous cases in the heartlands, she can speak & teach only using mother tongue. Atleast during initial docile years, Lingo Franca for convenience and comfort for learning the universe around ought to be mother tongue only

4. A psychologist avers that a child can be taught as many as six languages at a time. Knowing extra language like Japanese & Mandarin ( or Cantonese) enabled many madrasis then - Chennaities now enabled earning huge amounts in foreign currency as translators. Many Tamil literature related books are sought by Chinese in their language. Translators lucratively employed or remuneratively engaged in foreign consulates or embassies for translating local news/ happenings in their country’s language.

5. Young Translators learn quickly a foreign language immediately after their graduation are in great demand the world over . They translate great popular novels in Indian languages to other foreign tongues making quick riches.
