"We have ordered an enquiry into the incident," Defence Minister A K Antony said on the sidelines of an Indian Air Force function here on Tuesday. The three Indian officers -- a Lieutenant Colonel and two Majors -- were deployed in North Kivu Brigade of the Mission of the UN in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC). They were detained by the South African Police last week after a woman in Pretoria alleged that she was raped by them. The three officers were on a holiday there. The three officers, who were detained on March 12 and kept in police custody, were released after the Indian Embassy officials in Johannesburg intervened in the matter. Sources in the Defence Ministry said all the three officers were returning "very soon" as their term had ended there. Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Milan Naidu, while reacting to the report, said "It's an allegation only. But still it is an embarrassment to the Army. We are awaiting the enquiry report". India has the largest contingent in MONUC with more than 4,300 personnel. The mission was set up by the world body in February 2000 to bring stability in the region. <!--google_ad_region_end=article--><SCRIPT type=text/javascript> var RN = new String (Math.random()); var RNS = RN.substring (2,11); var b2 = '<iframe src=""\"http://adstil.indiatimes.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_sx.ads/www.timesofindia.com/Stories/index.html/1'+RNS+'@Right3?\" WIDTH=255 HEIGHT=250 marginwidth=0 align="left" marginheight=0 hspace=1 vspace=0 frameborder=0 scrolling=no bordercolor=\"#000000\"> </iframe>'; if (doweshowbellyad==1) bellyad.innerHTML = b2; </SCRIPT>
If this turns out to be true, really a SHAME ! I felt really ashamed when I recently read about the tragic death of a 15 yr old girl from abroad who was raped and killed in Goa. Police are still investigating......:spin What a shame !
If its true, what an embarrassment. They should all be stripped of their honor and put up in jail for years to come. About that Goa incident, I read that they caught the guy and are waiting for trial
i really feel sorry for the girl called scarlett who was raped n murdered in goa..such a shame tht tourists to india are treated this way !!!! lov sowmi
What an embarrassing incident :-( The best punishment is not stripping the culprits of their army status...as done in a movie, their citizenship should be stripped !!! No punishment is more worse than a motherland renouncing its citizens.
if it is true,it's a huge disgrace to our country. In the recent past lot of foreign tourists were met illtreatment in india, some of them lost their life in indian soil.culprits should be punished.
