This festival happens on the mattu pongal day, the abhisekham starts early in the morning and before sunrise the Lord will start from the temple and the time of crossing the temple entrance the sunlight will fall on Lord shiva's face. Its so good and blessed to see the sunrays on the lord's face.

After that the Lord shiva will do girivalam and will come back to the temple after performing dance in the Thiruvoodal street next to the gopuram. This is the only day god himself goes for girivalam in arunachala.

There is a saying if you see thiruvoodal there is no maaru udal( no next birth to this body)
