The reluctant Mama Elephant !

    Hi pals,

    Just came across this news item and am sharing it here.

    A baby elephant,whose mother rejected it soon after birth, has been successfully reunited with its mother.Soon after 13 year old Rose-Tu at Oregon Zoo gave birth on Aug 23rd, she began to kick her newborn.The staff at the zoo, afraid that the calf would die, quickly separated the two. Over that weekend there were repeated attempts to send the baby back to its mother but Rose continued to be aggressive. Finally on Aug 27th their efforts were successful and the baby nursed happily. Till then the keepers were desparate to make the poor "inconsolable" little one comfortable. They believe that since Rose was a first time Mom she became aggressive .
    A case of Post Partum Blues that is not unknown among humans too .

    Thanks for sharing this information, which tells us that even in animal kingdom., they experience the say emotions as we do..
    moreover, did you notice the name of the baby elephant, is Samudra and they are going to call him Sam..

    Hi Pauli,

    Can't believe animals also can act in such manner!

    I have heard of some cases in Mumbai where mothers have abandoned their babies for some days post birth! Some of them have even tried to hurl the baby on the floor!

    Later, they calm down and accept the infant!
