I fell for S.D.Burman in the early fifties. His songs would invariably find a place in the Listeners choice at 8 A.M. in Radio Ceylon. Before the program starts, there would be an half an hour program of old songs. The program would always conclude with a song by K.L.Saigal. Burman's songs would be very melodious and emotional. The earliest song of his that captured me was by Lata in the movie Paying Guest. Listen to it: The heroine of the movie was Nutan who died of cancer when her career was flourishing. Her niece is Kajol who is creating waves today. Coming back to Burman, he had scored music for some many blockbusters in Hindi like Guide. The one song that lingers in my mind is by Rafi in the film Kagaz ke phool: The hero of that movie, Guru Dutt, had great fascination for Burman. He died while he was composing the music for Mili His son R.D.Burman also became a celebrated composer. Tail piece: OJ a celebrated Ilite is Burman's nephew.
Hard to pick from his masterpieces, but for me S.D. Burman is synonymous with O re Maajhi mere sajan hain us paar. Movie Bandini (Nutan, Dharmendra, Ashok Kumar). I had bought an audio cassette of his hits. Shopkeeper said the cassette is hardly sought by customers. I have faint memories of someone in the neighborhood having LP record of SD Burman's songs, and of another person playing them on a harmonium. Was Listener's Choice at 8 am later called Aap Hee ke Geet? Maybe I am mixing up program names from Vividh Bharathi and Radio Ceylon.
Beautiful selection! Talat and SD Burman is yet another golden combo I can listen to all day long. Thank you for the series @Cheeniya
+1! Talat Mahmood was quite a good-looking man. Sadly his movies never did as well as his songs. S. D. Burman was a titan among composers but I am a huge fan of his vocals as well -- a haunting, soulful voice with the faintest hint of a Bangla accent. Wahan kaun hai tera musafir jaayega kahan...
i was just looking at all my subscriptions on you tube and i saw you posting sd burman.. some if his compositions were copied by other composers in other languages.. my fav.. wahan kaun hai.. jayen to jaye kahan zindagi ae zindagi umeed bhara panchi...
Am set for the day. Here is another masterpiece sung my all time fav vocalist . I dont think any other singer would have done justice to this song. His voice is like silk ! Its parent SD Burmans bengali song
