commercialism in temples has become a pain in the neck for a long time now. I have decided not to visit Tirupati at all. You stand for hours together and for what? two seconds of darshan before you are pushed forward and said "jarugandi jarugandi"! I much prefer smaller or lesser known temples. My dad's side temple is in Karur, thanthondri malai perumal temple and my husband's is Uppiliappan koil in Kumbakonam. These perumals are said to be brothers of Tirupati perumal and to be frank just as beautiful and much more peaceful. I will not say there is no commercialism here but not at big as the others. When we visit in the off seasons and non festival days its an absolute pleasure.
In the summer time we do the Santhanakappu for the Thanthondri Malai perumal and all my family (First cousins, second, third everybody) gather there and we have a splendid time.
