    Hello all,

I am travelling to India today and need to use cash there. Want to know what is the best way to carry the money to India. I used to take travellers checks before but it is a hassle to visit a travel agent and show your passport to get the money. I have a check card from DCU and want to know if usign that in a ATM is the best option. Would it involve any exchange rate expenses or atm cash out rates? which way is better with less cost? thanks.

    Hi ,
Yes you can use your ATM debit card in ATMs in India. Just make sure it has that STAR symbol on it. I have a Bank of America account and i use my ATM card at the ICICI, HDFC, citibank, HSBC ATMs without any problems. You will be charged by your bank for using a Non bank ATM . But it is still worth it. I used to withdraw about 25k rupees at one shot and the fee for the ATM use here was around 3 bucks. Check with your bank before you go as to how much fees they will charge you. I feel this is more convinient that carrying travelers cheques.
