    Love&regards,
    Revathy

    Alangudi Kshetram.

Alangudi is primarily a guru pariharasthalam. This place is nearly 17km away from Kumbakonam town. Guru Bhagavan is in the form of Dhakshinamoorthy at this holy place. The presiding deity of the temple is Sri Aapathsahayeswara or Aaranyeswara, a Swayambu Lingam, and the Goddess is Elavaarkuzhali. Thousands of people flock here to have the dharsan of Lord Dakshinamoorthy.
The Devas, churned the paarkadal (ksheera saagaram) to get nectar. While doing so, Vasuki sent out the poison from his mouth. The devas were caught up in the poisonous fumes. They prayed to Lord Shiva for help. Seeing the plight of devas, Lord Shiva consumed the deadly poison. That was why this place is known as Alangudi (Place where Lord Shiva consumed the deadly poison) The deity was came to be known as Aapathsahayar. Here Lord Ganesha killed the demon Gajamukhasura and hence Lord Ganesha is called 'Kalangaamal kaatha Vinayagar'.
Lord Shiva helped Sundaramurthy Naayanar to cross the river that was flooding, as a boatman, to reach Alangudi. The boat capsized hitting a rock and Lord Shiva seated on his Rishaba Vahana helped Sundaramurthy Naayanar to reach the temple safe. Sundaramurthy Naayanar received his gnana-upadesam after his darshanam of Lord Shiva in the form of Dakshinamoorthy at this temple. This temple is the Pariharasthalam for Madhyarjuna Mahalinga Peruman. This is the fourth amongst the Panchavarunya Sthalas. Vishwamithrar, Thirumal, Brahma, Lakshmi, Garuda, Ashta Thikku Balagas, Ayyanar, Veera Badrar, Mukunda Chakravarthy, Suvasanan, Sundarar have worshipped at this temple. Parvati undertook severe penance and married Lord Shiva here.

    Radhe Krishna!!!

    harihara temple- karnataka

Harihar. in the district of Davanagere is an ancient town situated on the right bank of Tungabhadra river.. . According to legend, a demon named Gulhasura who lived here managed to please the gods Hari and Hara by his penance and obtained a boon from them by which he could not be killed by either of them. He was finally killed when the two appeared in the composite incarnation of Harihara (Hari+Hara). This episode is supposed to be the reason for the name of this place. you can . visit the famous Harihareshwara temple here. Built in the Hoysala style in 1223, the image of Harihara stands 4 feet tall with its left portion representing Lord_Vishnu and the right, Shiva. Scrutinize the fine scroll-work on the friezes. The high standards of the Hoysala artists is evident in the microscopic Goddess Lakshmi represented on the lintel of the doorway. The lotus flowers in her hands, the elephants by her side - so delicate, so distinct.

    Re: Mookambika Devi Kollur

The Mookambika shrine at Kollur is in Karnataka (and in Kerala). It is located at a distance of 147 km from Mangalore. The nearest railhead is Udupi, and it is well connected with tourist centers such as Mangalore and in Karnataka and Kannanur in Kerala.
Kollur is known for its association with Aadi Sankara. Mookambika is said to have appeared before Aadi Sankara here, and he is said to have installed her image at this shrine. There is a room near the sanctum - enshrining the Sankara Simhasanam which is regarded as the very spot where he meditated and had a vision of Mookambika. Mookambika is regarded as a manifestation of Shakti, Saraswathi and Mahalakshmi. The Kudashadri hill houses sites such as Ambavanam and Chitramoolam where Adi Shankara is believed to have meditated.
Deities: The swayambhu lingam in front of the image installed by Adi Sankara, has a golden rekha (line) approximately at the center, and is considered to be a Shiva-Shakti manifestation. The image of Mookambika is in a seated posture, bearing the conch and the discus.
The <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" /><st1:City><st1:place>Temple</st1:place></st1:City>: Located on the banks of the river Sauparnika (said to possess medicinal properties) at the foot of the hill Kudashadri. The temple is located in a spacious courtyard, and is entered through the eastern gopuradwara. The western entrance is opened only on special occasions. It is believed that Aadi Sankara entered the temple through the western entrance.
Legends: Kollur is referred to in the Skanda Purana and was originally known by the name Maharanyapura.. A sage by name Kola was advised to worship Shakti at Kollur. A lingam appeared on its own accord then at Kollur, and Shiva requested Kola rishi to worship it and that in due course Shakti would manifest herself as Mahalakshmi there. The name Kolapura eventually changed to Kollur.
Further, the ravages of the demon Kamha bothered the ascetics of Kollur. Upon being requested by Kola and other sages of Kollur, Shakti cursed the demon to become mooka or dumb. Undaunted, the demon continued his atrocities, and an enraged Devi vanquished him. Upon vanquishing Mookasura, Devi is believed to have merged into this self manifested Lingam in this temple. 24 km from Kollur is Maarana Ghat where it is believed that the demon Mookasura was destroyed. In the temple at Maarana Ghat, there is a Sri Chakra symbolizing Devi.

    Barat Mata Temple, Varanasi

    <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:smarttags" /><st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">TEMPLE</st1:City></st1:place> FOR BHARAT MATA AT VARNASI

An aspiration of every devout Hindu will be, that at least once in his lifetime he should visit Varanasi ,more popularly known as Kasi, the holiest of all places. Once you reach there apart from taking holy dips in the different bathing ghats of the river Ganges and wash off all accumulated sins till date, there are number of famous temples, including the abode of god Shiva at one of the twelve Jothirlingams in the country where one prays for peace of one's soul and also perform religious rites for one's departed ancestors.
Varanasi is considered as the oldest living city in the world and holds a preeminent position in the religious and cultural ethos of Hinduism , unrivalled by any other place. From time immemorial, Varanasi has maintained a traditional and classical culture in the field of music, education ,tapestry, fabrics like silk weaving, not to mention of its religios fervour and ancient glory ..There are temples scattered all over the city and in every nook and corner, There are temples for Kashi Viswanath, Visalakshi, Annapoorni, Drugadevi, Kedarnathji, Kalabhairava, Dandapani, Mahaganapathy, Veera Hanuman and every other god, mentioned in the scriptures.
In such a deeply religious surroundings. you will be pleasantly surprised to find a temple for BHARAT MATA., unique in that ,at no other place in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">India</st1:country-region></st1:place> will you ever find a similar temple. Hence it not only catches your attention immediately , but also takes your memory back to those pre independant days when the freedom movement was at its peak, and the chanting of this one word was a source of inspiration to millions of volunteers participating in the freedom movement.,and who had to undergo untold sufferings in the form of lathi charges, incarceration, hard labour and at times even also death sentences .But the surprising aspect was that Bharat Mata had no form or image or idol or for that matter even any resemblance to any living being and every person was free to evolve their own mental images at the very mention of the name. and so it became that much more curious.
Having visited the prominent temples in the country in Bharat mata temple with preconceived ideas and hopes about its structure , layout, corridors, about their conforming to the age old Agama sastras, only to be totally disillusioned. In fact the so called temple has been housed in a two storey mansion., and at the centre you will find a map of India carved in marble slab of a dimension of 35feet x 35 feet, serving the purpose of a deity as Bharat Mata. Hoisted at a considerable height. ,the marble map lucidly depicts the land scape of the country , with all the mountains and its heights, the rivers with their widths and the contours and the valleys , the delta regions all portrayed in its natural excellence .It embraces in its fold the Himalayas in the north, Kanya Kumari in the south, and further countries like Afghanistan, Tibet, Burma, Sri Lanka at its borders , perhaps for the reason that they were all forming part of the same Empire at one time. Because of the huge size and the height at which it had been erected it becomes difficult to have a closer look or darshan of each part of the map or the Idol
It was one SHIVAPRASAD GUPTA , a rich and affluent citizen of Varnasi ,who first conceived the idea of having a temple for Bharat Mata . A true patriot , his heart was always with the freedom movement and had rendered , in his own way financial or material help to the freedom movement. He was saddened by the fact that during those days there was no proper image of Bharat Mata in the form of an idol nor was there any temple for that purpose .He was a delegate to one of the sessions of The Indian National Congress, at <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Karachi</st1:City></st1:place> , which was spearheading the freedom struggle at that time . On his way back he visited an ashram in Pune, where he saw a map of the country carved on the green lawns depicting prominently all the mountains, rivers the delta regions and the entire natural beauty of the mother land .With the deliberations at the congress session mainly centering around freedom of the Bharat Mata still fresh in his mind and the thought of a common and universally acceptable image always evergreen in his mind it struck him ai once that the map of India as developed on the lawns in front of him was the most appropriate figure that could be adopted as the true image and symbol of Bharat mata. Once he returned to Varanasi, he started putting into action his thoughts and dreams..
The temple work was commenced in the year 1918 and was completed by the year 1926., and the temple was said to have been declared open by Gandhiji. Dedicating the temple to the Nation the late Sri Guptaji declared that his dream of erecting a temple for the mother of our land, despite all difficulties and obstacles faced when the country was under foreign rule , was fulfilled and it was gratifying for him to see that that acadamecians, and students artistes ,tourists, pilgrims , irrespective of their religion, creed, faith thronged the temple to have a glimpse of the Bharat mata ,and that posterity would also continue to derive the same sense of pride, and spirit while making a visit to the temple..

But , what was considered once as a symbol of the struggle for freedom for the country ,,the unity of the people, and the harmony among the various religions, today stands deserted and desolate..

    Hi Arcot,

Nice informative article. I'm from Varanasi (in fact my house is just a couple of miles from Bharat Mata temple) and so your post holds even more interest for me.

I feel if the administration marketed the place a bit more, it would make a difference. Because right now, not a lot of people know about this temple, even the good residents of Varanasi itself.
