Researching A U.s. Based Nonprofit?

    Any suggestions on how to research U.S. based nonprofit organizations? I looked at GuideStar.org. It gives the IRS Form 990 filed by the nonprofit in the past 2 years. That helps but not much.

    These nonprofits are local to my area or have a significant presence here and work for a specific cause. There are only about 7-8 of them involved with this cause.

    How to find out more about each?

    Contacting the nonprofit directly is an option but wasting their time for a relatively small biannual monetary donation is not nice. I read this and agree.

    Asking in local social media such as Nextdoor.com is another option, but the discussions there soon go downhill.

    While deciding on a noprofit, my interest is mainly in its monetary efficiency, such as what is discussed in this article:

    You can check their Section 501(c)(3) filings. Tax, salary info etc. for non-profits are public by law. Your tax accountant / attorney will know.
