    Hi ILites,

One of my friends is getting married, and she wants neither Light Music nor Carnatic concert for her reception. She wants to know if there are any other different ideas to celebrate the reception like maybe hiring a VJ, or having some other show. Could you please let me know the trend now in the South?
Or if any of you have any other ideas please let me know.

    Regards
    Vidya

    Hi ,

Here I am going to give some ideas.

    1) You can keep MAGIC SHOW.
    2) You can arrange for val piyan ( One man + One monkey) programme.
    3) Have some Mimicery show.

I will think about this and come back to you:-D

    Dear Vidya,
the trend still is light music, which I must say is not good. There is a marriage hall near my house. Most of the songs they sing are fast numbers which have very vulgar meanings and also are not apt for such joyous and sacred occasion. Sample of songs sung- chingari charakku, sorgam madhuvile, chinna veeda varattuma, manmadha rasa, valameenukkum.
I just cringe when I hear all these. And also, many people meet their near and dear ones in a marriage and they might want to spend time talking with each other. So playing a mild instrumental music, thro a cd, will make ti peaceful and the crowd will be happy.
But, it is one's personal wish to do what one wants. So as already suggested, you could have a magic show or something like that, for a short period. It is doubtful how many people will watch it.

    My dear Vidya !

This is just sharing with you, what we had for my nephew's wedding in Madurai.
We picked out young girls & boys from both families & formed two teams. Then there was a " Pattukku pattu" competition - the songs were tamil, hindi everything. Everyone was cheering the respective sides & at one stage, the bride was tempted to join ! The whole thing was such fun & went on & on. Finally, as the dinner was getting delayed, we had to call "quits" !
I am so reminded of the enjoyable time we had for more than 2 hrs !
    Love,
    Chithra.

    Hi
Hiring a VJ will work if everyone wants to dance and join in the fun. This I have experienced in a south indian family's wedding celebrated in Delhi. The reception was held the day rprevious to the actual wedding and clubbed with a northie Sangeeth-like ceremony, ending with a dance party, in which the bride and the groom too participated. So the VJ was a great hit.
But if its a traditional Reception with the newly weds standing apart from seated guests, then a non intrusive background score of instrumental music is more suited than a concert because, as Varloo says, most people are so engrossed in socialising and heading to the dining room, that no one pays much attention to the performer.

    Dear all,

Thank you so much for the ideas. Will surely pass on those to my friend.

Dear Varloo, I totally agree with you when it comes to light music. I dont enjoy it at all because most of the filmi lyrics are so vulgar and not at all appropriate for an auspicious occasion. Also the audience doesn't pay much attention to the performers even if the concert is a carnatic concert. So it would be better for the audience to just greet the couple and head for dinner.

Dear ChitVish/VidyaSarada/Krishnamma, your ideas are great, I have already forwarded these to my friend.

I shall update you on what the couple decided to do.

    Regards
    Vidya

    Music in wedding Reception

    Hi
    I just saw this thread
    I think i can help u
Actually The music players who plays music at the time of Mangalasuthra Dharana(at the time of tying knot)...those people can give good music at the time of Reception also.
They give some melodie songs & romantic songs music (Only music not vocal). They play film songs & some Thyagaraja Keerthanas.
    Enquire them about that.

3 yrs back at the time of my marriage reception they played very nice melody & romantic songs music.
we all were surprised & last our relatives & guests were appreciated them.

    Hope this will help u
    Cheers:p & All the Best
    Bye :wave

    for reception idea

    hi,this is my suggestion
1.They can info this to both side relatives any one who can sing well, who can play violin, veena like that some people may be talented in this vocal, dance or instrumental. so that they give opportunity to those people, may be their first arrangratram(first performance on stage).:clap & finally give some memoranto for them.
    2. they'll arrange for anthaksari(paatukku pattu)really it'll b interesting,v all enjoyed a lot in my sister's marriage, v arranged like ladies & gents side & set times ,within the time u have to sing, really nice programme.
pls convey my wishes to ur friend.:)
    bye,
    vivbass.

    just a thought- reception

i just happened to look at this thread for an idea.
i have a couple of them
1- If it is a traditional wedding reception then you can arrange for a bhartnatyam programm by kids .Like there should some bhartnatyam teacher living near by your home back in chennai .You can request their students to performace. In this way it could be an explore for the students as well as entertaining the crowd
2-If the bride and grooms family are quite modern then you could also arrange for the fashion show .This fashion show could be arranged by some boutique shop .These shops are owned by upcoming designers and would like to market their product to the entire crowd.I thought one of the way could also be this .

Hope you like this idea.May not sound practical but if the shows clicks then it may start as a trend too .

    All the best
    Deepa
