    RELIGIOUS DRIFT

Drifting away from one religion to another by choice or otherwise is not as bad as drifting away from religion itself which is not thinking about God or becoming increasingly secular.

Are we part of it or acting blind? I think it is both.First, we have failed to pass on our religion to the generation next both in words and deeds. Thus we have become part of it. What is worse is that we have confused them by narrating our religion is best and at the same time telling all religions are equal. If all religions are equal how can religions be good, better or best?

Materialism, pleasure, secular media, lessening family ties, growing immorality have added to the already degradation. This way not only we are part of it but we are acting blind too as we are not seeing the danger ahead.
The unsavory and shameless actions of so-called Godmen and women have driven away from the already dwindling numbers of believers.

The problem is ever body complains of bad weather but nobody can change it. To protect ourselves from the unpleasant weather we have centrally air-conditioned our houses and trust all is fine.
Locking ourselves in our Puja rooms will not help. We will have to keep our doors wide open and welcome all those who want to come in irrespective of caste, creed or color. The more the better. It can neither be by force or allurement or both.
We will have to do away with prejudices, needless rituals, and orthodox behavior. We will have to tell that God is only a concept to bind us together, nothing less, nothing more. We will have to be frank enough to admit that we have not seen God, at best we have experienced some supernatural power that guides our destiny. Till such time we find a real answer, we continue calling it God.
We will have to come out of that mysterious concept of creation and the creator. We will have to accept that though we have seen and experienced the various sides of creation we have not seen the creator as we see his or her creation when we open our eyes. If we can not see it, it is not there, as simple.
Yet we need a God. We have created Him for our good. The obligation is on us and not on Him. He has not imposed Himself on us. He is happy as long as we are happy.

I think the generation next and next will understand if told in simple words.

    Amen.

    :hello:
Father of Nation felt all religion says same truth except path shown to arrive at destination is different from each other. He wished a cosmopolitan culture :
“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the culture of all lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any”

Only this fact to be hammered into the heads of all including the present and next and future generations.

    • .Alber Eisenstein said to have stated that Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.”

But youths of today perhaps feel Religion & science are like two sides of the same coin.
Modern science makes young to drift away from religion and sanctimonious monks of religion stands exposed and many found to be hypocrites not knowing themselves the path to the truth.

There is a confusion among young of present gen whether a person can be spiritual without being attached to any religion.

Young ones in this gen being pulled this way that way by existing evil forces among agnostics, atheists & sanctimonious monks and is not that easy to convince them to continue to believe in religious rituals and dogmas.

There is a very modern way of saying I am not religious but I am spiritual, meaning that I am not ritual but believe is some super power or I do not believe in rituals or any super power but I believe in doing good and humanity.
Defining spirituality is becomes like believe in super power and not believing at the same time.

We also were a 'present generation' once !!!!! As far as I remember, I started questioning the authenticity of the various rituals we were performing at home and I was told you are still a child you will understand when you grow. And as I was growing, I learnt that the earth revolves round the sun and not the other was as our past generations were made to believe. And then, someone landed on moon and another myth shattered. It went on.
This generation is much more argumentative and curious with a scientific bend of mind. They are not prepared to accept any belief on its face value.

Religion is supposed to be coming from a Latin word that means “to tie or bind together.”..says google. (I still wonder why we need to have a latin root name...if anyone knows pls explain...:innocent:). Well, as long as an individual becomes an adult he/she is free to choose /accept/question etc., etc anything and everything including religion..

.Since I am aware of only Hindu rituals and about Hindu texts , let me say here that to bring a proper coordination and discipline in everyone's life there were code of conducts. This is how vedas, which were orally transmitted later came to be written.

It allows each individual pursue his/her own way for fulfilling the desires, worldly or spiritual, artha, kama, mokasha, within or rather adhering to dharma. Dharma in a sense means that we should treat the entire world as we would expect it to treat us. Hence for those who desire wealth, progony, you name it...it prescribed certain rituals which had proven to have brought the fruits of that particular ritual..It has lost its meaning in the present day world...is another matter.

Before British occupation the education system in vogue took care to impart this message to all through vedic system of education...Soon as 'power corrupts', priests becoming supreme ..etc., etc., along the foreign rulers (*#@?) changing the education system made even my father's generation ( I am 70) gradually shifted to western influence resulting in not having the right type of material to pass on..

But the desires are always there, so these rituals were followed in the true manner by a few, but largely in twisted ways by many. This is one reason we are helpless when it comes to our next gen. We dont have anything of substance to give or share.

Yes, like Mr.Harilekha, I have also questioned and even my g.ma could not give a proper answer..we were hushed in the context of disrespecting elders by questioning.

But when I started acquainting myself with our scriptures, especially vedanta, the final part of the vedas, I realized that be it dvaita or advaita, they advocate harmony of the whole universe, even all living and non-living beings are included, Hinduism shouts out oneness , then where is the difference? Our sanatana dharma believes in 'Viswakudumbakam'. Jesus Christ as well as other religious figures meant only this in their own ways.

having opp. minded parents,I had been confused and so allowed my children to figure it out for themselves, while following the min. mandatory rituals during their childhood, at least for them to know about these things and then come to a conclusion.

Hence we can say that anyone who follows the principles of dharma, be it from any religion, that person can be attributed to be religious.

Thanks for elucidating the subject in detail. Religion as you said was derived from Latin. From Google only I get that Hinduism is the oldest religion-some 4000 years old. I still hold the belief that in the early days, there was no answers for certain happenings and humans had no option to to attribute them to God's wishes/doings. Thus we had Gods for Indira as rain God, Agni for fire, and so on. With time all this was explained as act of nature.
As it goes, with advancement in technology and experimentations, many myths could not survive. We saw some of our Tantrics, producing any fruit or flower of your choice with a flicker of fingers.
It is impossible to live without doing something to survive. After satisfying the basic needs, then started looking for comforts and luxury and the greed to accumulate as much as possible again for fear of uncertain tomorrow.
You are very right to say that let the young decide what is best for them. However, knowingly or unknowingly we keep some sort of pressure on them to follow the age old practices-one of them being kneeling before our family deity/ touching the feet of the elders.

Am sorry sir, no... Indra etc were not gods, but devathas or entities to control/manage each aspect of the universe and its functions. God concept was from the west. Man started worshipping devatas or the nature around (that is another vast subject altogether) to understand, accept and respect it....and later on to fulfill his desires.as in .'every action brings its own reaction' principle.

"I still hold the belief that in the early days, there was no answers for certain happenings "
yes, it was so, and even now it is so....we do at some point of time wonder what this life of ours is about, why ,how it all started etc., etc. As I said earlier, people started to search inside, i.e. in their minds, closing all external stimulants (which we call meditation now ) why we acquire and lose interest in the outside world easily, and nothing gives us permanent happiness, it being the only elusive & impermanent thing throughout our lives.

What we call Tantrik , black magic etc are part of the Atharva vedas. The one thing called differently in different parts in the world...What we call tech advancement is nothing but the influence of science over our lives and the waning of our traditional systems of knowledge.

It is noteworthy here to mention that science is yet to prove the creation ,jumping from one theory to another , a never ending monkey business, to satisfy the intellect, a very tough customer here, presently coming to our own "consciousness' theory. Long back we had resolved this through our great philosophical studies, most importantly learnt how to 'live' in the present. This is one important reason West reaches out to East when it comes to peace of mind, happiness etc.

And for the age old practices, yes, we cannot impose anything on our younger gen, or rather on anyone for that matter...but human behaviour is such parents/g.parents think that some good might come to the young by doing so..More than that some harm might come to them if they dont. Not everyone is open minded also.
