Question about honey-Remedy for cough??

When DD(she was 4 months then) had cough and cold a friend of mine(she is a doctor here in US) had come to see us. She said giving a little bit of honey will not harm the kid but will help her. She said in countries like India honey is considered as a medicine for infants but just the western countries shed a negative light on the medicinal properties. I did give some honey when DD was about 8 months old and did not see any side effects.
