hi i heard that you should have knowledge of several programs like sql vb unix to be a tester, do u have to be in computers/or know IT to work as a tester any input from current pl who work as testers pls share .... its confusing as i totally have no IT background ...... pls share your views
I am not in QA but as it is an integral part of my projects, I can offer this: in order to work as a QA tester, one should know the methodology, framework, testing tools (automated), and some level of technical knowledge along with ability to program a little…this depends on the type of project…some may require Unix, database and little scripting knowledge. I have to ask you if you are planning on applying for QA jobs or training to get a job in this field as you mentioned that you have no experience in IT. It will be difficult without any QA knowledge to get a job in this field. Some training is required, if not more. Just my two cents…. Do a google search on QA testing and requirements to become a QA tester and you will find tones of information on this topic. Vib
Newbee, QA testing is a very broad area. It covers biotechnology(QA test medical instruments), industria), mechanical (QA test manufactured items), communications , telecomm (QA test audio/video instruments)etc. By your post I gather that you are looking at becoming a software quality assurance tester. So yes you do need to be computer literate since 90% of the software is developed to be run on personal computers. All computers have operating systems OS (NT, UNIX etc) And you also need to be knowledgeable about data storage systems (databases) and query languages (SQL). You do not need to know programming languages (VB, Java, XML, HTML etc) to get an entry level job but it is certainly helpful to progress in the career (senior level ....QA Specialist/ Business Analyst, IV&V specialist etc). My suggestion for you is to take introduction to computers course, introduction to microsoft Access course and a basic SQL (101) course. this perticular post in the QA forum will also help you Software Quality Assurance Forums: Non- technical website tester -> technical tester good luck with your career...
Wow...This was the topic I had been thinking to post on but i did not know the technical word for testing(SQA) and so all my google searches did not turn up as expected. My background is English and I always wanted to enter into computers. Some of my friends long back told me that this Testing job might be an option. So friends....what do you say/ What are the other options for some one like me with no computer experience ...but would like to take up a job in computers? Is there any associate degree that I can take up? Pls suggest..
Shravanthika, in the link i posted, there is answer to your question. In fact the poster to the sqa forum has background like you. Take advice from the experts....

Thank you Raj ! Those were good sites indeed.. I was even longing to get some good sites for refreshing about testing basics.. That was a good information indeed.. Keep posting good website links constantly.. Keep Growing With the Society, Cheers..
Hello Friend, I am working in QA testing. People who are new to IT, well i would say QA testing would be the good start to enter into IT. QA Testing is of 2 types. Manual testing Automated testing. Automated testing requires programming knowledge skills whatever may be the project. Manual testing does not require programming skills but requires basic Computer knowledge sometimes varies with the type of project. So, u need to attend for training which is necesasry before u start ur career in IT/QA....manual testing would be a good start for them who have no knowledge in IT before. including SQL skills is MUST. For some projects which used UNIX, basic UNIX skills is nexessary but not all the time. that is very easy to learn.... To learn SQL : W3Schools Online Web Tutorials is the good website for basic SQL skills. One more website for IT: IT QuestionBank or Free Training are also some of the good websites u could go through. If you need any other information, let me know. Good Luck... Chitti.
