Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD)!

[FONT=&quot]I was detected with PCOD recently (Polycystic ovarian disease), doctors told me there are signs of type 2 diabetes and gave me some insulin medicines.[/FONT]
[FONT=&quot]The whole process of testing and medication has left me in a fix, I am just 24 years old and having diabetes seems a bit strange to me. What actually is this type 2 diabetes? And why do I need insulin to control it?[/FONT]
[FONT=&quot]If I think for other symptoms related to diabetes, I am not at all obese and I don’t eat many sweets then how can I get this kind of problem?[/FONT]
[FONT=&quot]Are there any specific tests which I should undergo to confirm the problem. I am really tensed and will really appreciate if anyone can help/guide me in this regard.[/FONT]

Actually, I have no idea about the PCOD and how it is related to Type 2 diabetes but I can tell you the difference between the Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes for which you are worried:

See,There are two major types of diabetes, called type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes was also formerly called insulin dependent diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas undergoes an autoimmune attack by the body itself, and is rendered incapable of making insulin. Abnormal antibodies have been found in the majority of patients with type 1 diabetes. These antibodies are proteins in the blood that are part of the body's immune system. The patient with type 1 diabetes must rely on insulin medication for survival.

Type 1 diabetes can occur in young, lean individuals. Of all the people with diabetes, only approximately 10% have type 1 diabetes and the remaining 90% have type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes was also previously referred to as non-insulin dependent diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, patients can still produce insulin, but do so relatively inadequately for their body's needs, particularly in the face of insulin resistance. In many cases this actually means the pancreas produces larger than normal quantities of insulin. A major feature of type 2 diabetes is a lack of sensitivity to insulin by the cells of the body (particularly fat and muscle cells).
In addition to the problems with an increase in insulin resistance, the release of insulin by the pancreas may also be defective and suboptimal. In fact, there is a known steady decline in beta cell production of insulin in type 2 diabetes that contributes to worsening glucose control. (This is a major factor for many patients with type 2 diabetes who ultimately require insulin therapy.) Finally, the liver in these patients continues to produce glucose through a process called gluconeogenesis despite elevated glucose levels. The control of gluconeogenesis becomes compromised.
While it is said that type 2 diabetes occurs mostly in individuals over 30 years old and the incidence increases with age, we are seeing an alarming number patients with type 2 diabetes who are barely in their teen years. Most of these cases are a direct result of poor eating habits, higher body weight, and lack of exercise.

Hi Ladies , for pcos Polycystic ovary syndrome l started 1tea spoon of cinnamon powder with half cup of normal water in the morning.I got my period this month and I am so happy after struggling of years I am happy now.I had normal meal but some time half lemon and I feel my periods are regular now.otherwise my periods6-7 month late.consuming cinnamon reduced insulin resistance in women with PCOS.help balance insulin levels in order to regulate blood sugar and control weightgain but I don't know about fertility. talk with your Dr. before having cinnamon powder. Thanks this is my story and am 35 now happy with 1 kid . just wanted to share .

I am not even 20 yet and have PCOS. I have a history severely affected diabetes patients from both my mom's and dad's sides. My dad himself has diabetes. I am very much prone to it and my sugar is usually on the higher side. So stop worrying so much...I don't worry as much you do. Just take care of yourself through exercising and diet. You'll be fine.
