I wish I were a butterfly The butterfly, when it falls in love Does not ask the mate, Are you from my caste? I wish I were a sparrow The sparrow when it mates, Is not worried one bit If his mate is white or black. I wish I were a flower The flower gives itself in totality And is not bothered Whether her lover is rich or poor. I wish I were a cow The cow never asks her mate when they unite Do you love me as much as I love you? I wish I were a deer The deer never asks his wife when he holds her tight What is your take home? I wish I were any animal For ,in their world Which is so different from ours There is no ugly dowry. It is my misfortune that I belong to mankind In my beautiful world There is no such thing as selfless love For us money is everything. It is my misfortune that Iam a humanbeing In the unique world where I live Money is all important Nothing happens without money. It is my misfortune that I am a man In the wonderful world where I live Religion, caste and creed Form the foundation of marital bliss. It is my misfortune that Iam a woman In my bittersweet world A woman is treated so badly She is burnt when she does not bring dowry. If you are going to give me another life,my God Please let me be a butterfly I want to enjoy the pleasures of being alive I want to love with abandon If you are going to give me another life,my Father Please let me be a flower I want to know what it is to love With one’s entire being. If you are going to give me another life,my maker Please let me be a cow I want to give myself to my partner Without a shred of doubt in the heart. If you are going to give me another life,my saviour Please let me be an animal In their world, where Dowry is not heard of. Please, let me not be born as a man or woman For the the laws are different here for different people A woman who is a mother ,is raped and abused A woman who is a mother is burnt without remorse. Please, let me not be born as a man or woman For the rules vary here depending on your riches An honest man loses his job for being honest A dishonest man can become the ruler,he knows to survive. Please let me be born as the wind And wipe the sweat from a labourer’s forehead. Let me be born as drops of water And quench the thirst of the roadside workers. If you are going to give me another life,my God Please let me be born as anything, but not a humanbeing Great are the sufferings and heartless are the people here I do not want to suffer anymore, I do not belong here.
