Phool patti work is famous in Uttar Pradesh as well as Gujarat and Orissa . Though all three states use fabric bits to give an applique effect to the base material (fabric ) , the end effect and the names are slightly different . And this work is done on translucent fabric and the pattern creates an opaque effect on the fabric.
In Uttar pradesh it is called phool patti were-in the leaves are the main design element and the embroidery is done by cutting the patti or petals and attaching to the fabric using invisible hemming stitch using sewing thread.
For beginers it is easier to cut the petals in stiff material like organdie and fold the sides to turn the raw edge of the fabric inwards and then stitchin according to the design the pattern .
In Gujarat it is called katau kaam (or cut work ) and in Orissa it is called Pimpri work as it is the name of the place where it originated.

Hi radhu ,this emb is famous in Aligarh, and the crafts men do on thin cloth. the bits are organdy materials which are very easily folded into petal and leaves shapes,,generally 3 or 5 petals are used in one flower. tendrils , veins are stiched in stem or chain stich,,cotton thrads are used to stich the petals and leaves , same colour thread .the skill is in hiding the stiches.
