NEW DELHI: One person was arrested and another detained after a sting operation by a private television channel showed that they were allegedly involved in trafficking of women, some of them minors, forcing them to conceive and selling the babies to childless couples.

Preeti was arrested on Saturday night from the Shakurpur office of Adivasi Sewa Samiti, the placement agency run by her husband Vinod in partnership with one Benjamin. Benjamin has been detained, while Vinod, who was in Jharkhand at the time of arrest, is absconding.

According to the complaint recorded by the Delhi Police, the trio used to bring over young girls from Bihar and Jharkhand and exploited them physically as well as financially. The video recorded by the television channel showed the agency offering the undercover scribes a six-month-old baby when they expressed their desire to 'purchase' a child. One person was also shown asking for an advance for a new-born, to be delivered in a few months.

Perhaps people who can't have children are also indirectly responsible, if there was no market this would not happen. There are so many orphanages so there should not be a market for these babies!
