Most of us, if not all, know already that our inner components are made out of the same five elements that constitute the outer components. In simple terms, Microcosm is nothing but the same composition of the Macrocosm. Our Karmendriyas (organs of actions) are made out of earth, our five Thanmatras (five senses) such as sound, touch, form, taste and smell are made out of water, our five organs of knowledge known as ear, skin, eye, tongue and nose are made out of fire, Pancha Pranas (five breaths) known as balanced breathing, life wind diffused in the whole body, life wind rises on the throats and enters head, vital air (prana) and down breath are made out of air and finally Anthakarana (Inner senses) known as the Cognizer (Jnaatha), mind (Manasa), intellect (Buddhi), egoism (Ahamkaram) and effulgence (Panchakam).

What can we do with this information? I have to be made out of something and I was made with five elements. What difference does it make? How does it matter whether my composition is the same as the composition of this universe? I am different and I am not the same as anyone else I come across. I lack some qualities others have and I have some qualities others lack. The best way to address these questions is to study what we see around in the outer world. When we see the tree, we feel very humbled how much it help other beings through its shadow, fruit, leaf and especially how it protects the planet. It sacrifices throughout its life to contribute to the very element that it made out of besides helping the element to protect itself. Similarly, the animals are also constantly contributing for the well-being of these five elements and they are all environmental friendly. They don’t definitely contribute for destruction of the environment.

Let us discuss now about each elements and what each element teaches us. When we see earth, what comes to our mind is its patience. No matter how many trees are cut to make papers or to build dwelling units for human beings, the earth remains calm. We explore digging earth to find natural resources but it patiently sacrifices itself for the well-being of the humanity. In simple terms, the earth sacrifices a lot for the benefit of the creations. Similarly, we need to use our organs of actions primarily to serve the needs of the fellow beings or for sustaining the cells located in the inner world. Let us use them to practice non-violence.

Water has the tendency to surrender to the gravity of the earth and sacrifices itself to the need of the creations in the world. Without water, the life will cease to exist. Similarly, the five senses should surrender to the will of the Creator and should sacrifice its self-gratification attitude for the well-being of this world. The five sense are given only to explore the creation and through which understand the Creator and not for self-gratification. We should see the form of the Creator in everyone, hear good vibrating sound, touch the heart of the fellow beings, taste the healthy food that is the lowest in the food chain and smell the aroma of the nature around us. The senses should help us love everyone around us without any discrimination. We should never use them to hurt anyone.

Fire is one element that defies the gravity and stands up straight with great intensity. Our five organs of knowledge should be used to get the highest knowledge that exists. We should adapt the quality of fire not to differentiate anyone as fire converts everything into ash whether they are high or low value. Our character should be like fire and should stand up with pride and dwell in righteousness.

Air fills every place in the planet without which the life can’t be sustained. Pranayama teaches us exactly how to control our breath and practice healthy living. When we learn how to control our breath, we are nurturing the body (temple of the Creator) to function harmoniously. We have to be grateful to air as it provides the opportunity to sustain ourselves. Our breath should help us to achieve peace of mind that we deserve in constant pursuit of bliss.

Lastly, Ether is light and is also omnipresent. Our subtlest components are made out of the lightest of the five elements. This is the purest form of all elements and should be kept as such. We should not dwell on legacies of hurt feelings and emotions and we should get rid of all of them. We have to keep our mind pure and unadulterated. We should look for lessons in every experience whether the feeling arising out of it is pleasure or pain. Our intellect is the subtlest form that constantly interact with our consciousness and therefore, we have to discriminate as much as possible to experience truth in life. When we float in our subtlest form most of the time, we don’t feel the pain of our existence and feel effulgence.

Each of the five elements contribute for the well-being of the life and it is in our hands to use them wisely.

Wow! Viswa Sir on his favorite lessons on metaphysics and as usual at his best.
With posts like this, you make me go flabbergasted with your knowledge n thought process Viswa Sir.
Nature though exquisitely beautiful serene and green, it has another side too with its earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, tornadoes, cyclones and so many in its fierce avatar. Just like how these panchaboothams could be destructive, our human nature could be ruthlessly devastating too when we go through whirlwind of emotions.

But tell me Sir, Isn’t due to pressure of constant abuse and turbulence that the tornadoes and volcanoes of emotions erupt? Mother earth, the epitome of patience and tolerance does lose her virtue after a point. Isn’t it coz of subdued pressure on her patience? Thinking on these lines..I feel the earth uses the fire elements to burn the evil, malicious, hurtful, pen up emotions taunting her and let the water elements free flow to wash away and drain the ego, let the gentle breeze from air elements assuage the heat, causing a soothing effect after the burning of wrathful anger. Finally the space elements revitalizes the self by making you feel as light as the ether. She’s back to her usual, her patience personified self.

Like they say “puyaluku pin amaithi”..there is a calmness after a storm, an after beauty to the havoc caused by nature as well. The serenity after the turmoil and the hope of new beginnings surfaces after an unseen end. That say’s the nature’s tenacity to return to stability – her inherent eternity of nature’s character.

    Dear Neetu,

Thank you for your first response and kind words. You are right on target.

The other side of the nature (five elements) are direct reflection of the nature of other creations in the planet. The question we have to ask ourselves is do we give the respect these five elements deserve? How long environmentalists are screaming that we are creating unmanageable hole in the Ozone layer that is constantly increasing the temperature in this planet and someday might become irreversible? How many photographs are published about big snow mountains are falling in Arctic and Antarctic due to general increase in temperature? How systematically we are destroying the trees to build cities or for manufacturing paper? How much of garbage is thrown into the seas? Under the name of exploring the natural resources, how systematically fracking is done to earth? Are we making effort to keep our rivers clean? How systematically we are polluting the air? With all these actions, where is love for these five elements? I am not questioning the scratching of the surface to make a living as every creation has the right to do so as the nature is created only for the use of the creation. However, the plants, birds, animals and insects comply with the needs of the nature but it is only the human being that cross the limit of what is acceptable utilization of the nature due to selfishness.

Dr Hawkins developed a theory to measure the level of consciousness in the world and according to him, we are at precarious 200 out of 1,000 which means our emotions, anger, conceit, desires, ego, hate, jealousy and greed dominate over our pure and unsullied consciousness. We continue to be selfish, our thoughts are tainted with undesirable bad qualities and we have lost the principle of inclusiveness. We are even at this level of consciousness only because of the Saints and Seers who are constantly praying for the general well-being of this planet. Only at the level of 500, we achieve Universal Love for the fellow beings.

Unless there is a systematic effort to preserve the nature and change our attitude so that collective consciousness of the human beings increase, we are bound to destroy ourselves. We have to get to a stage where no beings suffer in this world and we have to work hard for the common good of the beings in this planet. If that happens, there is a good chance to prevent hurricanes, earthquakes, infernos and tsunamis.

In simple terms, the composition of the Microcosm is in Macrocosm as well. When we add more to the original qualities of five elements we are made out of, we should expect the nature to reflect them.

    Dear Viswa,
A great inimitable write up on 'five elements or pancha bhutas.I am reminded of Vastu sastra which is aimed at arriving at a harmony between the inner and outer energies.
Vastu refers to the form of construction of the house and the energies or forces called into existence by the arrangements made and the materials used in the construction. The subtle chemical results, may not be visible to the the naked eyes, yet are still there and any evil tendencies that may produce danger, disease or death to the occupants, must be very sensibly and dexterously neutralised or counteracted.

The astrological works lay down certain principles where those evil influences are averted. In any plot, various energies - good and evil - are at play continuously. These energy fields get distorted when a building is constructed on the plot.
This is where vastu sastra gets its share of importance.

Our ancients, arrived at a certain way of building so that these buildings worked with the forces of nature rather than against them, in the process making man a compatible part of the area/environment. There are energy levels both outside and inside human beings.. When the energy fields of the structure interact with the energy fields of the person, good and bad results follow. Hence, elders felt that it was all the more necessary to build a house such that the two energy levels, one of the animate and the other of the inanimate, worked in harmony and resonance.
    .

Since the whole universe is a composition of five basic elements: Fire, Air, Space, Earth and Water. Through these, our body receives Internal Energies in the form of Proteins, Carbohydrates, Fats etc. and External Energies in the form of Heat, Light, Sound, Wind and so on .

The basic principles of Vaastu enables us to achieve balance among these ; giving more flexibility of body mind for a better life .

When the harmony between these elements gets disturbed our energies get dissipated in different directions leading to stress, tension and ill health and our peace of mind is destroyed. We then have to redirect our Energies subjectively as well objectively , so as to achieve an equilibrium between Internal / External Energies, to attain a healthy body and a happy mind leading to health, wealth, happiness, prosperity and success .

    Home-Vastu

For better results, any activity in your residence or office should be supplemented by the cosmic position of the elements.

The North-East (NE) is assigned to Water : Have a bore well, underground water tank in that position.

The South-East (SE) is assigned to Fire : Have your kitchen, pantry, furnace, boiler there.

The North-West (NW) is assigned to Air : There have a guest-room bed room for unmarried girls or a store for finished goods .

The South-West (SW) is assigned to Earth : It is the most stable of all elements. Keep it heavy and this is the best place for master Bed Room.

The Centre is assigned to Space : Have the least possible activity in this area.

These are general guiding principles in Vastu sastra.
But the saddest part is the principles are getting diverted and fake vastu pundits are fully utilising these five elements to their best advantage .Many spend lakhs and lakhs on remodelling restructuring ending in great disappointments. It is high time that people should realise that the'pancha bhootha pariharam' normally referred to by the so called vastu experts can never be a remedy to our problems in life.
Viswa, your snippet has made me introspect in a different angle, as recently my neighbour consulted 'pancha bhutha specialist. paid him huge consulting charges. The person suggested some major modification to his house leading to an additional expense of Rs 2 lakhs.
    Still problems remain unsolved.
Let pancha bhutas do their duty and let us do our own based on ethics and moral values.

Since vastu is closely associated with 5 elements, I thought of sharing my views. Sorry for distraction.

    Dear Smt. Jayasala:

Thank you for enlightening me with the Vastu Sastra and its significance. I never knew that it is done with the objective of synchronizing five elements inside of us with five elements outside of us. I knew that the basics of Vatsu Sastra like astrology is in Adharvan Veda.

Probably, when one complies with the principles of Vastu Sastra, we will have the capability to handle the problems in life courageously and achieve Bliss. However, when it became commercial with false propaganda to make money out of consulting, it turned out to be a mission that is degraded by the selfishness of those so called consultants.

    Dear Sister Saisakthi,

Sai Ram. As you know, an atom has a nucleus surrounded by protons and electrons that spin around it. There is a lot of space between these particles and these space is called ether. It is the vibration of this space that creates action to an atom. Without the presence of this ether, every atom, every cell and city of cell called living being all will be inactive.

Humans and everything that has life has etheric body which looks identical to the physical body but functions at a higher frequency that is not recognized by our physical plane. Ths etheric body has the same frequency as ether.

For examples, light travels at 1,86,000 miles per second which is considered the fastest in the material world. But what really travels at a speed higher than the light? It is our own thought. Thoughts are arising out of this vibration and transported through ether just like radio, TV & mobile signals.

Understanding the presence of ether and its capabilities help the development, assimilation and communication easier. As we all know there are 25 constituents in our body, 5 organs of actions, 5 organs of perception or knowledge, 5 sensory faculties, 5 life-breaths and 4 inner instruments called Mind, Will, Ego and Inner Motivator called Anthakarana. All these four instruments are in subtle form and has the same frequency of ether. It does not form part of the 20 constituents mentioned earlier that can be felt in physical plane. The life-force, the 25th constituent which emanated from the cosmos is also called Mahakarana as it is self-luminous and effulgent. The four subtle constituents that has the same frequency as ether has the highest potential to develop, assimilate and communicate faster than the constituents in the physical plane.

For example, if we tell a child to do something and he or she does as told, that doesn't create a sustainable impression in the space available in the nucleus. Whereas, if we explain a concept or ask questions that seeds a thought in the mind of a child, it creates a strong impression in the space available in the nucleus and becomes a will power. No wonder psychologists are asking parents to raise children to be decision-makers and become accountable for their mistakes rather than telling them to do right things all the time.
