Shailendra woke up at his Oshiwara residence and snuggled himself near his laptop switching it on. He did not even care to wash his face or brush his teeth. His mother was busy rushing to office while his father was away on office tour.
“Shailu beta, wake up. Don’t you want to go to college.”
    “Haa Mom”
“Your milk is kept ready in the table alongwith bread. Today, I have an urgent meeting to attend, ok.”
    “Haa Mom”
His mother readied herself and slammed the door behind her as she rushed to office.
Shailendra never got used to see his mom and dad and spend time with them together since childhood. He was the only son and was pampered to the hilt. Video games fascinated him. At an age, when he should be playing in grounds and bullying with fellow kids, he was racing motors and hooked to high speed games.
By nature, he was very reclusive and had few friends. He did not invite them to his house as he did not want them to share his luxuries. He was an average student. This did not matter for him as his father had all the money in the world to get him admitted in Computer Science, as Computer was his favorite subject.
Shailendra was in any way not interested in academic stuff. He loved the make believe world. He downloaded X-rated videos and watched them all night. If he got bored of them, he turned to Social networking sites in different Avatars. He boasted of 1000 friends in Facebook, out of which 900 were sweet girls as he put it. He once tried to kiss a girl in college, but was slapped promptly. The incident provoked him and he got so obsessed in the safer confines of virtual network.
Shailendra’s father, once in a while used to take him to parties and boast to his colleagues about his son’s gaming skills.
Shailendra’s cellphone started ringing as he was logging on to the Net.
“Sorry Beta, I forgot to tell you bye. Did you brush your teeth? Your milk is kept ready in the table alongwith bread.”
“Haa Mom, how many times will you tell this? I am not a small bachcha.” Shailendra shouted but realized that his Mom had kept the phone even before he could respond.
He put his phone on the bed in disgust.
His face brightened, as some Stella had promised to be online in the morning.
He had been chatting sweet nothings with Stella since last two days, which veered into some sort of hot chat.
Today, he was to propose Stella for a date and some….
Shailendra’s face frowned, as no one was online.
    Damnit.
    Stella was to come now.
Ok, if Stella was not online, what about Rupa, Shweta or Prachi.
    No one was seen online.
He got up, put some paste on his brush and sat beside the laptop and started surfing while he was brushing his teeth.
No one was online in Orkut either.
He spit in the wash basin, started sipping milk as he scrolled the Net.
    Bull****.
No one was online in Yahoo Messenger either.
He kicked himself, and went to college. Shailendra kept to himself. Shweta was sitting in the right corner of the classroom.
He bit himself, and was itching to say Shweta, why was she not online.
He knew that he could not, as always chatted with her with a different login name.
“What a bitch she was? She talks sweet nothings to damn good for nothing fellows in chat, but behaves like innocent over here.” Shailendra kept thinking.
As soon as the class was over, he rushed out of the campus. He did not want to see his classmates hanging around in the campus.
“They are not worth even a penny, but flirt with these stupid girls”, he spoke to himself.
Shailendra kicked his bike and zoomed back to his home. He hurriedly opened his laptop and logged on the Net.
    No sign of Stella.
He was getting irritated. Stella was the only one outside college, he chatted using his real name. He was to give his phone no. to her and talk to her as well as go on a date with her.
He got angry with himself. He thought he was seeing Stella online, but dismissed it as illusion when the Internet connection snapped due to some technical problem.
This really got over his senses. He was not used to sit before a computer without net connection even for a minute.
In a fit of rage, he took out some X-rated videos and watched them.
He was not feeling really charged up, as he used to.
Shailendra walked out from his house, and kicked his bike and zoomed past the streets.
He did not know, where he was heading.
As his bike zipped past on top speed, he did not even notice a school bus taking a sharp turn and crashed head on.
Here Stella was on the Internet, not knowing what must have irked Shailendra. She really liked him through his interactions over the net. He seemed to be a nice guy and a bit naughty. He was supposed to give his phone no. and meet her. Despite being online in the morning and the noon, why was he not responding to her?
Stella shrugged herself, and got back to bed thinking of Shailendra, a man of her dreams.
She woke up to read about the death of a young college teen in a bike accident, not knowing that he was her very own Shailendra.

Needless to say that this is exactly what is happening in our younger generation. And guess it is growing with time. I think it is mostly because of the lack of socialization within our communities. You have portrayed Shailendra as a lonely kid growing up. So he became accustomed into it and thought whatever he does on the internet/community sites is immune to the society. It might be seen as a temporary infatuation, but such situations has known to create problems when the youngsters were stupid enough to 'commit' to someone they met on internet(apart from some exceptions). In my opinion Having such relations over the internet should be discouraged among teenagers...

    hi suresh,

you hv nicely potrayed today's fast society where tv and internet hv becomes children's babysitters. they hardly socialize with their own family let alone the community. busy moms and dads find it easy to leave their children in front of tv.

    A good read.

Well atleast they should maintain good interactions with other relatives.. uncles/aunts/cousins... these kids seek such online relationships mostly because they are bored(monotonous lifestyle), and lack of maturity for the major part. If the mom and dad are working, its also their duty to atleast make the kids feel how hard they are working.. and its only for the kid. kids might not realize in the teen ages, but they will definitely understand once they are little grown.

    Hai Suresh,

We have to be patience if really we like somebody. Even if the small small things will make the person feel more if they are in LOVE. The expectations will be too much in pure LOVE. You have analysed and made it in a good portrait form.LOVE is not too easy to be LOVED always.
