Looking for ethnic sarees in Calcutta

Hello hot IL girls, My sis is getting married and we would be visiting Calcutta soon. I also have a spate of Marriage Receptions “biye baris” to attend in Calcutta and my saree collection is falling miserably short for that. I have a few modern trendy designer sarees in my wardrobe for partywear but no ethnic ones. I am really looking to buy some good stuff this time, which I can wear in these string of Biye Baris and also wear them here in Canada.

Can anybody please help me out? I have hardly a week bonkleft to do the shopping. Please lend me some last minute suggestions… all those Dhakais, Jamdanis and Kantha stitches? Where can I get the best ones?

Go to ‘Adi Dhakeswari Bastralaya’ in Gariahat and buy whatever you feel best. :rotflGariahat is a hot shopping spot of Kolkata and contains some of the best saree showrooms. So, if you do not like ADB, you can give ‘Traders Assembly’ a try. The prices are quite reasonable there and the quality is good. Hi, I am new to IL and already feeling the interest mounting in me - Oh! All you gals seem to be digging onto my eternal favorite topic…YES! Saris I mean! Reshmi, why don’t you wear silks for your Didi’s wedding? I’m sure, you will like their fine, lightweight fabric and can wear them for formal occasions as well. Go to Indian Silk House in College Street - they have the best collection of silk saris.

Adding to Bhaswati's suggestions ... You can also go to Adi Mohini Mohan Kanjilal at Cllege Street crossing for the best saris of all types. They have a very good collection and most of their designs are exclusive, so you won’t find those designs elsewhere...

Hi, Good to see the Indian ‘nari’ coming out of the modern chick! Why don’t you drop down to ‘Priyo Gopal Bishoyi Grandson’ in Barabazar, Kolkata. You see it’s a huge saree shop and easy to spot. Just take your Didi along with you and let her select the wedding wears for you. I'm sure you'd be confused with such a huge collection!:confused2:

The best of the lots will have an average price range starting from Rs 1000 - 1500 and can go up endlessly. So, I suggest you do not run out of funds :rotfl

Hi Reshmi, Your IL friends have given you a lot of references of Sari stores in Kolkata, so I will not suggest another one…But, I have some ideas about ethnic saris and maybe my tips would help you to make a better choice.
Sreejata suggested silks to you…well, they need some maintenance you see - quite tough if you are busy lady. Instead, make ‘tashar’ your priority - these are wonderful low-maintenance, silk-like saris, easy to handle. South silk and ‘Kanjivaram’ are also gorgeous looking saris you could wear for your biyebaris – but they are not ethnic Bengali ones - they are a bit heavy and best in winter.
My top three choices for ethnic Bengali saris are Baluchari, Kantha stitch and Dhakai. You can choose any one of them – I prefer them because they are cotton – its so comfortable. These would come within 3000 to 4000 rupees (the good ones) and they are all hand embroidered. They are not as gorgeous as silks but very ethnic and beautiful.

Hey Hey, Thanks a lot! I'm flooded with all your infos.Drowning I mean I'm just getting addicted to IL. If I keep trying all those stores and all those sarees I'll run bankrupt.:rotfl Ha Ha! I'll try to visit as many stores as possible during my stay in Kolkata. I would also check out all the varieties yo all have suggested. But, maybe I won't have much time for my Didi's marriage.
