Dear #anika, in the title of thread you had mentioned "current" India which I noticed on re reading. Many states are in dark cauz there is no current reason being many. In pockets in each city in India would be having quality power supply. Equipments often get damaged and one requires enormous patience to get a replacement or invoking warranty. Most of the service providers talk sugar quoted words but service less said better it is! In the name of removing black money, people made to suffer and this followed by new service tax regime GST , PRICES SKYROCKETED. in the name of creating genuine eagalitarian society common man is doomed. There is a creation of veneer of progress but inflation has not come down, black money unearthed, employment creation nose dived, few lac million jobs lost, human resources wasted in unproductive ventures. There is an interesting communication between black & white money of Bharat Mahatha received from an octogenarian of Mumbai: (quote)
    My Dear Black,
I am your weaker sibling, white. How are you? I am fine here in India
and I hope you are enjoying your stay in Switzerland. I am writing
this letter as I have heard that you are coming back to India. Is it
true ? If it is, then I will suggest you to please reconsider your
    decision.

Black, do you remember the days when we were together and there was no
difference between you and me. We were simply, Money without any
discrimination of black and white. But then some corrupt politicians
and cruel businessmen separated us forever. Since that day, you have
been growing in numbers and I am left on the mercy of salaried
employees who do not have the privilege of you.
People often call me No.1, but it’s you who went places- from
Mauritius to Dubai to Switzerland, while I was locked in FD, Post
Office or in PF. While I suffer from high rates of Income Tax, Service
Tax, VAT, Property Tax, Entry Tax, you are immune to each one of them.

You will be glad to know that today, there is no piece of land in
India which can be sold or bought without you. You have been
successful in buying MPs and in past, have made special appearance in
parliament as well. Credit goes only to you black, that today, even a
government peon can become a millionaire.

People here won’t accept a girl even if she is slightest of black,
however, when it comes to money, they treat both black and white
equally. But despite all this please don’t come back from Switzerland.

Black, if you will come back, don’t expect to be of any help for poor.
You will again be routed in the hands of those special few on the
pretext of schemes like MNREGA or Indira Awas Yojna.
Instead of the wonderful lockers of Swiss Bank, you will be kept
hidden behind the walls, beneath the bed and sometimes, even in loos.
You won’t get the privilege of cheques or credit card. In its place,
you will be exchanged on the basis of Rs.10 note. Some smart peoples,
who call themselves Chartered Accountants, may also force you to
convert into me. But that’s not the worst part.

Trust me brother! Don’t come back to India because the hearts of
people, here, are blacker than your colour.

    Your cleaner self

    White Money
(TDS deducted!)(unquote) I am sure with this type of sorry state of affairs, those who enjoy better standards of life in foreign countries would not like to re immigrate to India.
    regards.

I agree with you on most points but one thing I wanted to mention is about the maids (or lack thereof). I keep reading this- in India you can have maids, drivers, and what not. My family in India has all these service providers and I do not feel envy. Why? Because in USA we don't need the daily service providers (at least I don't feel need). We have roomba that we switch on in morning or at night and by the time we get home/ wake up, the rooms are clean. Cleaning person comes twice a month and cleans all the windows/showers/toilets, dust everything. The houses are build in a way that don't get much dust anyway. Kids put away their toys before going to bed so there is not much in terms of straightning. Washer and dryers do their job. Dishwasher is there to take care of the dishes. Yard maintenance is outsourced.

We are definitely not senior executives or business owners. We are a dual income family with ~200k joint income and two little kids in full-time daycare. So, we might not be eq to 40L per annum but I really feel like we have everything we need and then some.
Happiness is important regardless of where one lives!

I agree about this. I prefer not being dependent on maids, drivers, watchmen. There is a bit of satisfaction that comes from being "self-sufficient".

I grew up in the US, so there's little reason on why I would want to move to India, other than for the cultural experience. But, when I put myself in other people's shoes and imagine living in a foreign (yet highly prosperous) land, away from family and friends, I would still consider the US as my home and plan a way to move back here. All the riches and convenience would not make me miss my home any less.
