Indian food -IS FOOD FOR HEALTHY LIFE

    hi friends this is a good contest and i see lot of useful healthy recipes,tips, information and food facts .In this busy stressful life hw many of us take time to even think about nutrients and medicinal values of indian diet?Iam happy for the one who started this contest and made us think about this.

    Every ingredient used in indian diet tend to possess some medicinal value making indian food a comprehensive diet with combo of carbo,protien,fat,vitamin and minerals.let me share what ever i know about these medicinal value

    1.turmeric (manjal in tamil)- it is said regular inernal intake of turmeric in food prevent cancer.its highly anti bacterial in nature.

    2.garlic (poondu) - it tend to reslove gastric problems,improve immunity.

    3.pepper (milagu)- boost metabolism ,improve immunity.

    4.ginger (inchi) - helps in digestion,cures acidity,tune in liver secreations.

    5.small onions- rich in sulphur,increase anti bodies in body.external application of small onoin said to cure alopecia areta.

    6.tomato- good cleanser for body intake of fresh tomatoes help in weight loss

    7.pudina - blood purifier,rich in iron,good cleanser

    8.cardamom stick (patai)- improve metabolism, intake of water soaked with cardamom stick is said to prevent bone and joint fever.as well control diabetes

    9.cloves and elachi-improve metabolism,prevents food infection.

    10.moong dal (pasi parupu)- rich in iron,having boiled moongdal in empty stomach cure stomach ulcer.

    11.urad dhal (ulandhu parupu)- rich in iron and protien good for females as regular intake of it strengthen back bone for females.here in south india when a girl attains puberty she is given special dish called us ulandhu kalli that will help in strenhing back and hip bones.

    12.fibre vegetables- provide rich vitamins fibre places heavy role in weight loss.

    13.broken wheat,barley,bajra,oats,- these cereals are wholesome food rich in fibre must have in schedule for weight loss.

    14.cabbage- aids in weight loss as well water boilde with cabbage had in empty stomach cure stomach ulcer.


    15.horse gram (kollu)- a great source for weight loss,it can be used in different forms as kollu powder,rasam,parappu masiyal.


    very other dhals are rich source of protien with combo of iron,vitamins and minerals, we use different combo of these ingredients in every meal we prepare.ther is many more to list but due to time shortage i could nt do that.bt iam sure indian diet is itself medicine for healty life.in short those who understand tamil nam unnave marunthu,marunthey unnavu.

    Hello Srenesubbi,

    Nice thread. The kitchen is a place of pride in every Indian home. Besides churning out delicacies, every ingredient has some significant value.

    The Indian diet is a complete diet. Our thaali consists of dal, rice, vegetables, salad, chapati, a sweet preparation etc. This not only is a feast to the eyes, but is also full of nutrition for the body and prepared with tender love and care.

    The kitchen can be the quickest first aid corner of the house as there is a remedy for almost every ailment.

    Some remedies that I know of are.....

    *Take very hot water and add a tsp of honey in it. Consume it just âefore
    sleeping and take small sips. A good cure for Asthma.

    *Applying garlic oil on the back gives immense relief from back pain. Take about 10 small garlic pieces and fry them in oil on a low flame. You can either use sesame oil, coconut oil or mustard oil. Fry till the garlic cloves turn light brown. Let the oil cool completely.Thereafter apply it on the back and keep it for about three hours. In a couple of days, you'll feel its effects.

    *Lemon can be used effectively to treat common cold, as it increases the body resistance. Take one glass of warm water and pour some lime juice and a tsp of honey in it and consume it once or twice on a daily basis.

    *Cut fine slices of cucumber and rub on lips for chapped and dried lips.

    *A good remedy for high blood pressure - Take about 25-30 curry leaves and make a juice, using 1-cup water. You can even add on limejuice to it for making it tastier. Strain and drink it in the morning.

    *Turmeric is also a good antiseptic and very handy in the kitchen. When applied to a wound, it stops the bleeding quickly.

    Friends, the list is much longer than all the ingredients in the kitchen....Look forward to more tips...

    * Adding Tamarind water/pulp while cooking vegetables (for Sambhar) ensures minimum loss of nutrients from the vegetables

    * Adding mustard during tadka and adding it to dal/chutney nullifies the reaction of two or more different food items..

    Ella dear....Indian cuisine is probably very tasty that is because of the perfect blend of so many spices together that create a special taste.

    As you must have read, we are all very proud of our kitchens as almost every ingredient has an added value and adds to the nutrition that the human body requires.
