    Yes, whole urad dal if available. Otherwise even split urad dal can be used.

    I bought Laxmi brand rice ,and used both split and whole urad dal...dosas and idlis came out very well... thanks a lot ladies

    Try Ponni boiled rice for Idli/dosa..better than Idli rice of any brand...
