we are not in US but i would like to share my experience too!1

we stay in Maharashtra in India and are from Karnataka... our mother tongue is different from what is commonly spoken in this state... we speak konkani at home... and here hindi/marathi is mostly used...

our son is 2.8 years old... he knew only konkani till he went to play school (we put him to play school when he was exactly 2 years old) and a few english words... no hindi (he didnt want to learn hindi at all when we spoke)... now he is in nursery and he has picked a lot of hindi words and sometimes imitates his teacher talking in hindi!!
and a lot of english words too...

so its up to us parents to teach our native language!!
