That kind of advice could backfire if the OP is really dealing with a developmentally-behind fellow.

 

A gentle tap on the head to bring them to senses is sufficient for some people. But some need 'knuckle dusters' to make them see what they are otherwise not able to see. OP's case doesn't belong to the former category IMO.

 

A friend in a similar boat approached the problem as under:
She dialled her mother in front of her DH lying lazily on bed, and waited for a while - the moment response received from other end - she began narrating in detail about numerous fights and other silly happenings in the past 24 hours. As she was speaking, she studied his reaction. He turned red eyed. The talk was over.

“Tit for tat” she told DH. Then he said that he had realised that there was no point in narrating day to day proceedings of home & hearth to his side people including parents in India. That solved the problem. Wait. She showed her phone to him. She had not called her mother really. She only pretended.
