Glad you're aware There are three types of desires.(grasped in some reading) 1.Natural and necessary 2.Natural but not necessary 3.Vain and Empty Validate your desires and you will know the answers yourself. The desires which can be full-filled by you, The desires which can be full-filled by others and The desires which can be full-filled with the effort of you and others. Have more desires which requires just 'you' to full-fill it,because you hardly disappoint yourself, desires that requires others keep it low, desire which also includes you-put your effort in the right time-right direction to get that done. Categorize your desires and alter the inner-self. As far as you know that particular desire would take years to get there, You can very well allow yourself to worry and let the emotions get acknowledge. Look forward and enjoy the journey. Have fun come what may!
First thing is to understand the root cause of the desires. The subtle mind is weaved around our past actions and desires. For lack of better terms, the knots in a cloth are desires and threads themselves are the thoughts and once we keep removing the knots, the cloth called life filled with desires disappear. The very existence of life is an indication of desires. We have no control over the desires arising in our mind but we do have an option to observe them and become aware of them. We can sort them out as major life-changing desires and minor and immaterial desires. Among the major desires, we have to apply the following rules - A strong conviction to make an effort to fulfill that desire - Do everything skillfully, selflessly and lovingly with no expectation of the fruits. The conviction assigns a lot of energy to the effort whereas the attitude to do it with no expectation provides peace. Realization that we get not what we want but what we deserve becomes the mantra. Awwwww @ChennaiExpress I just noticed your signature on the lil Ganesha painting and am humbled by this gesture of yours. Thank you so much. I am glad that you liked it. I get to learn a lot from your posts as well.
If our desires revolve around other people( expecting love/gratitude/appreciation/acknowledgement/caring) , then we will get caught in cycle of expectation and disappointment. We have to accept that we can't control other people or make someone like us, what is more important we reduce our expectations, and do things for others wholeheartedly to whatever extent possible. But if our desires revolve around self improvement( learning/skills/talents/hobbies), then nothing can stop us from achieving if we work sincerely. By focusing on our goals with determination, we can distract our mind from negative/destructive desires. The more we get involved in positive/community activities, the less mind-space we have to focus on destructive/unfulfilled desires.
