Manju, have you tried kambu(pearl millet)..for that too, we have to remove the husk in the same manner..if you dont sprinkle water, the skin wouldnt come off...thats why I ask you to theluchufying water...but it is not compulsory to use pulse mode..the thing is you have to give a short run...else it might be get powdered..so give a run for seconds,give break and continue..let me know the outcome ....
I tried thinai rice yesterday and it came out very well, morning i just took half a cup (small) and it satified me for both lunch and dinner. I did not touch rice yesterday i do not feel any difference at all and i was so happy that i had something so nutritious.
Hi Friends! Very informative...I too bought the thinai with outer skin :bonk but successfully turned it as a ladoo...I washed it well and sundried...roasted and grinded it in Mill to make this recipe. If you get time just watch a cookery show in Jaya TV on every Wednesday 6.00PM, they show to cook different millet recipes....its really useful
Hi very useful and informative thread..For these varagu samai,kuthiraivali we an have the whole grains kulambu as side dish .It will be the best combination.Making curd rice in samai is very tasty..For ven pongal we an substitute rice with varagu or samai.Thinai arisi can be used for dosai .pls share if you have any other recipes
Thanks a lot and lot Prana i followed the same procedure and sucessfully removed the husk of it and also cooked it. I have once cooked pearl millet as well a year back but faced the same issue so i never used it. After knowing your method it will be easy for cook these millets.

Yes Machan we can substitute these millets with rice. Recently i have started using those..yet have to explore new recipes. I came thru few of recipes in some blogs ........ like Thinai maavu, thinai payasam, ragi has plenty of recipes.
