How safe is Westmead/Wentworthville in Sydney?

I have too heard of such incidents.. The precautions that we take is
Do not walk alone after it is dark
I generally avoid gold ornaments
Do not expose that you have too much valuable things at home
Do not keep the navigator in the car .. the people who break the car or garage look for small amount for their drugs

Even we are in the process of shifting to Wentworthville, close to westmead border. We had heard of these incidents before and what people have generally passed on is to avoid wearing too much of gold jewellery....
