Hello vidhukumar ! Dear VK, Thanks for your mail. If the thippili you have is small stick like, 2-3" long, it is kanadanthippili. Indhuppu is Indhuppu -Saindhavam -Sodium Chloride This is from a site. The other names, I do not know the english equivalents. I think they may not be available outside India, in which case , do with available ingredients ! Love, Chithra.
a fascinating thread Dear Mrs Chithra, I probably make the recipes/remedies in this thread the least, compared to your other recipes. This is mainly because I don't have the nattu marundu at hand. But I must say that this thread is the one that fascinates me most and if there are five new recipes, I check this thread first. I have a few requests, I will be grateful if you can, please, consider them at leisure: 1) Can you give us a list of nattu marundhu that we must keep at home- something like a herbal first aid kit of raw stuff. Then we can get these and make your remedies as and when. 2) Repeatedly I see ladies asking abt hairloss and premature greying.I also have this problemin abundance. Can you share some oils and podis for washing hair? 3) Can you give us a home made recipe for snanapodi? It will be so nice to have a nice alternative to soap. I know that someof my requests are a bit far fetched. Just consider what is easy for your posting. Thanking you in advace Sincerely Vidya
Hello Vidya ! Dear Vidya, I was also hesitating to start this thread because, leave alone the availability, I can't translate the names into Hindi or english ! I have a snana podi which i shall post & a simple hair oil with curry leaves which is perhaps the only possible preparation for N R I s. I shall consider your other request as well. But I have to admit that I am not competent as much as you all think - I just know some basics ! Love, Chithra.

Dhaniya-Dry Ginger Coffee - the traditional stimulant ! “Chukku kapi “ is always a favourite , particularly in winter & on rainy days. Milk is only optional – it is tasty without milk also, when taken hot. The best method to drink it is, using “ pananchakkarai “ or “karuppatti” ( black molasses)– ofcourse, if you cannot get either, use jaggery or sugar. They help digestion & are supposed to induce good sleep.. Dhaniya coffee powder(1): Dhaniya - 100gms Dry Ginger – 50 gms Parangi pattai - 50 gms Kadukkai - 5 Cardamom - 15 Dry in sun & powder. Dhaniya Coffee powder(2): Dhaniya - 25 gms Sarasaparilla roots - 25 gms (nannari) Saunf - 15 gms Pepper - 5 gms Athimathuram - 10 gms Amukkirakkizangu - 25 gms Dry ginger - 10 gms Cardamom - 5 gms Cloves - 5 gms Dry all ingredients in sun & powder. For this specially, “karuppatti” ( black molasses) is better than “ pananchakkarai”.
Curry leaves Hair Oil - very simple to make at home ! Wash well & grind fine, fresh curry leaves, as fine as possible with minimum water.( for those living in India, “ammi-grinding” is best). For 2 cups of coconut oil lemon size of paste is correct. Mix both in a kadai & put on fire. Heat on a low flame till the paste becomes like “ sand”. Let it stand for 24 hrs. Then strain the oil & use. !, 2 granules of edible camphor can be added to mask the prominent smell of coconut oil & curry leaves. Application of this oil is good for hair-growth as well as to prevernt premature hair-greying.
For cough & cold ( 2) - Yet another kashayam. Equal amounts of: Pepper Jeera Dhaniya Omum (ajwain) Kandathippili Sathakuppai Dry neem flowers Dry ginger Fry each till golden & crush everything together. To 2 tsp powder add 2 cups of water & boil. Reduce to 1 cup, strain, add honey & drink. Drink twice a day.
Dhaniya podi - does pep you up ! Dhaniya - 1 cup Gram dhal - ½ cup Tur dhal - ½ cup Red chillies - 4 Hing - 1 tsp Salt Tamarind - marble size (optional) Fry first 3 ingredients, each separately, on a dry kadai. Add ¼ tsp oil, fry red chillies & hing. Dry roast salt also. Tamarind can be made into small pieces & dried or the ball deepfried to make it crisp. Powder dhaniya, red chillies, salt & tamarind first Then add dhals & hing & powder. Some prefer not to add gram dhal.
For crack in the feet. Dry roast alum ( known as padikaram in tamil) in an iron kadai or ladle. It will roast like popcorn. Powder it, make a paste with olive oil or coconut oil. Apply it for a few days – it is very effective.
Periods - Safe ways to postpone & prepone. This is a common problem for all ladies when there is a religious function or a travel planned etc. The following will help – ofcourse you can’t say , they will work 100 %. It varies with individuals, but they are absolutely harmless. Atleast they will not tamper with the harmones ! If you suddenly get at odd times: Buy sabja seeds ( used for falooda, also called tukmaria or falooda seeds). Soak 1 tsp in ¼ cup curds overnight. Swallow it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Bleeding will stop. To postpone: 1 - Everyday in the morning take the above sabja seed – curd mixture, eat 2 bananas & drink a cup of water. You are not likely to get it the whole day ! 2 – On an empty stomach eat a handful of raw fried gram ( pottukadalai) & drink a cup of water. You can have coffee only after minimum one hour. You are not likely to get it the whole day. 3- On an empty stomach - add lime juice to hot (not necessarily boiling) milk till it just cudles. Drink this. To prepone: 1 – Eat seasame seeds+ jaggery ( 1 tbsp each) together. 2 – Eat a tiny pea size camphor wrapped in one “ vethalai” – betel leaf. 3 – On an empty stomach drink 1 tbsp of ginger juice mixed with 2-3 tbsp of jaggery.
