    Hi,
I will be traveling to India next week with both my kids . I heard that you have to pay customs duty on jewelry worth more than Rs20,000.

So I am wearing my mangal sutra and my kids are wearing a small gold chain too. So will we end up paying duty for these everyday items that we are wearing already ??

Also I am taking some jewelry to wear at a function there and will be bringing it back with me. So do I need to pay customs duty on that too even though I ma bringing it back with me ??

No you don't have to pay customs.

I never faced trouble. We can wait for others to respond.

Satsank...I had a bad exp when I went to India in summer(Blore airport). I was asked to open and declare all my jewellery and even my Mangalsutra was way more than the measly Rs.20,000 allowed. After much argument since it was my personal jewellery he agreed to make entries in my passport and I had to show it on the way back,. Unnecessary hassle. My cousin faced this(in chennai airport) and she was so annoyed asked him to keep it in the airport locker and told him she would pick it up on the way back. The guy was obviously not comfortable with that and had no such provision so let her go.
The law is being enforced but not everywhere and not to all . So its very confusing.

    Hi,
Your question is genuine. But I never faced anything. I wear usual mangalsutra, stud and bangles while travelling.
Those are of personal use only. Are they impose recently? I want to hear from other ILs too.
