@renuga my DD is also in the same weight range. Actually dropped off from the growth chart itself! This is what my paed advised me:

    1. Add more ghee/butter in her foods
    2. Give food at short intervals.
    3. If she does not take food in the high chair then feed her by distracting her (no TV)
    4. Give her utensils to play with. Kids usually eat when they play with utensils.

I notice a number of these recipes feature ghee, butter, sugar/gud, salt, margarine, spices and other additives. Is it safe to introduce these to a baby under 1 year old? Is it not best to avoid salt/sugar in their diet till after 1 yr?

Well instead of powdered sugar you could use sugar crystals(the big ones). And I dont see an issue with salt.So also ghee,my baby was taking home made ghee from 2months on,without any issues.

Yes, many doctors do advise against salt and sugar in the first one year. The reason is, since many veggies/fruits have natural sugars in them, it is redundant to use anything extra.
but culturally speaking, in India a lot of people do use salt and sugar with no apparent side effects. Even in west, a lot of us do use limited amounts of salt/ sugar.
