Kumari Puja is performed at Pathuriaghata on both Shashthi and Nabami. I once had the privilege of visiting this puja on Nabami. The experience of seeing the Kumari Puja was a memorable one.

Years ago, the “bisarjan” or immersion was done on two boats. The members and friends of the Pathuriaghata family carry the idols on their shoulders as they take the deities for immersion.
The 160-year-old Pathuriaghata Durga Puja was initiated by, Ishwar Ram Lochan Ghosh.

“Nilkantho” birds were once set free just before the immersion. It was believed that these birds carried the message of Ma Durga’s departure for Kailash to Lord Shiva.

“Balidaan” or animal sacrifices are not performed at Laha Bari. Vegetables and fruits are sacrificed symbolically. On Dashami, the Goddess is carried in the arms of men who have been performing this task as a representation of family lineage.

On the day of “bisarjan” or immersion, the pricipal entrance of the Laha Bari remains closed. After the immersion, someone calls out for the Goddess, thrice, from outside, to make sure that She is no longer there, and then the entrance is opened.

In the fouth generation of the family, Ishwar Durga Charan Low was washing his face on a Dashami evening after the immersion of Ma Durga. He was continuously disturbed by, a little girl, who was asking for alms. He drove the girl away. Later, he looked for her to give her something and found her nowhere. He found the main entrance open. He started believing that the girl was Goddess Durga herself.

In the year 1856, Ram Chand Seal started Durga Puja at his residence at Chorbagan. His descendants had performed Durga Puja since then.

The Seal family Puja is performed with great devotional fervor. Old rituals conforming to “Brihanandikeshar Puran” are performed.
The Seal family follows Vaishnab philosophy. So sacrifices are not offered to the Goddess.

On the auspicious day of Rathayatra, the first work of making the idol is done. All articles and goods required to perform the rituals of Durga Puja are purchased on the day of Radhashtami. Temporary shops are put up within the premises of the residence, on this day.

The vendors at those shops sell conch-shell bangles, vermilion, lac bangles and other traditional cosmetics and ornaments.

Bodhon commences on the day following Mahalaya and continues till Shashthi. The puja is performed by five priests. In addition to the traditional pujas on Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and Dashami, Kumari and Sadhoba pujas are offered on the Navami day. On Ashtami, the holy cow is worshipped in addition to a special puja at the River Ganga.
Each day of Durga Puja sees one member of the family offering a gold flower to the Goddess.

On Dashami, “bisarjan” or immersion takes place at Babughat.
