Gone are the days where a person writes a letter to his relative who is living far away. But now, wonders are happening with the help of a single button. What more! There are myriad of advancements in technology. As technology began to take its shape, lots of changes have taken place in our education system as well as it created huge employment opportunities. As a result corporate offices, new organizations are emerging.(on the rise) which really adorn the Technological boom Whichever technology you choose correspondingly you will find multitude of openings and courses in that .

A student after finishing his high school wants to opt for a course which has lucrative career options. Every parent wants their child to get the highest grade in examination. They strive hard to bring their child an ostentatious and outstanding candidate. This is an important moment in his life and it is at this point the confusion starts.A student faces exam tensions, cram his mind with equations, formulas, theories, experiences sleepless nights. While this is a deplorable sight one side, the other side is selecting a course which decides his career.

Apart from the multifarious opportunities and courses a person wants to step into a field which showers enough them money.People want to earn their huge money back spent on expensive courses. When we speak on expensive courses and big salaries only a very few options from the list hits our mind. The booming industries such as IT,Telecommunication,BPOs, are the most favoured options.

Obviously when a student enters Twelfth standard ,parents insist him/her to focus on marks so as to catch a seat in one of the above mentioned courses. In this situation it happens at times that a parent may fail to watch their child’s interests. They take efforts to make their child concede to their ideas/suggestions.Students definitely must listen to parents’ words.Nobody can disagree to this.A child may or may not develop interest in some other specialization other than engineering, medicine .Inspite of the fact that a child showing indifferent attitude and gesture of refusal still they are made palatable by the parents.

We may be of the notion that a person working for a multinational company alone have chances of coming up in life.Whether engineering and medicine are the only two options in life.I want to narrate a incident happened to one of my known person. He scored a pity score of fifty percent in public examination. His parents decided to join him in a engineering college. They made arrangements for money since his scores cannot get him a free seat.Though he refused and insisted that he is not interested to pursue engineering and opted for visual communication,he is not allowed to chose his role. His family members strongly opposed to opt for Visual communication course .“What? Have you gone mad?Are you going to become a cine star? This course will not suit for our family” was their reply. He was some how convinced by his family members to join engineering and he gave up finally .He was really not interested to study or go to college. His performance was very poor.He dropped the course towards the end of the semester exams. What is pain staking here is that all efforts taken for his least favoured course gone wasted.

From the incident what do you feel?Should students be given freedom to decide their career?

    Dear Bhargavi,

    Very good topic.
IMHO, it’s good that parents leave the career planning to kids. But as a parent, we need to discuss with the kids the scope of different fields. Parents should weigh the kid’s abilities before suggesting them a course/field. We could also take some advices/hints from Career Planning counselors. . The parents should start knowing their kids interest(s) when they are in eighth or ninth grade. If one wants their kid to be a doctor/an engineer, they should inculcate the interest in them when the kids are quite young. Some kids decide to choose less difficult fields after hearing from senior students that science/ math is very difficult in secondary grades. Parents should assure them that it’s not true for all. Constant participation in kids education might help in achieving parents' ambition. All the best!

    Dear sindu,
Thanks for ur feedback.I strongly agree with ur pointsDefinitely it is the parents who must guide the child in selecting a right career. What i am trying to say is that in present days, just taking the case of some one who is working for a top company and earning big salary is not wise.We can just catch up their ideas, suggestions, their good things which helped them to come up.But at the bottom line,as said by u ,i repeat ur words

"""" Parents should weigh the kid’s abilities before suggesting them a course/field. We could also take some advices/hints from Career Planning counselors"""""

While parents are suggesting a course/fied first and foremost thing they need to tell about the scopes of the field and then it is really important to know that the child is really interested in what the parents suggest. He may have some other options. Here also again said by u,they must assess child's abilities and find out if he has rightly chosen his option.Following that if they think that their child decided the right thing and also his skills match with his option. They can proceed ahead and must stromgly encourage and inculcate interest in them.

Secondly it is not that the parents must leave the choice completely to their child. They must also strongly decide a career and try to tell abt the prospects in the one they have chosen .

Again as u said by u some child just listen partially to other's statements and follow blindly which parents must never give space for that.Parents must find out that that if their child is really interested to go in a particular field and if they feel it is genuine, then they can go ahead. This is what i strongly mean to tell.

But today some children blindly chose a career with out knowing any facts abt it.Like i said before just following some one who has shined well in any field and opting for the same is not taken ino consideration.

I once again thank u for ur valuable feedback.

T here are so many courses other than engineering and medicine. In fact my daughter is planning to do journalism after her boards this year. There are courses in media arts, fashion tech, and even jewelry making.I feel the children should be given a choice and we can guide them. They should not be pushed into something which they do not like and later on regret about it.

    Dear kanaka,
Thanks for ur feedback.U r right. There are lots and lots of other courses than engg, medicine.First we must be aware that there are lots of opportunities which may be unknown to us.To add on i would say that courses on Event management are becoming popular.Lots of candidates are hired for that.It is organising various events for a particular function or seminar or whatever may be.Many big companies like Johnson&jhnson,Restaurants demand more.Like wise there are many other options.

    Thanks once again

    BC,

I typed a reply but because of some net problem it got erased last night...maybe i am not in the same frame....

    my views...

there are lots of scope for children other than engineering and medicine.
just look at mba it was just marketing, finance, then came hr now you insurance as a separate line. there are lot of finance courses.

My son always says he wants engineering and also wants to do something related to rocks...so just out of curiousity tried to find if both could be clubbed...as i was never aware of that scope...and to my surprise found seismic engineering...(my son is just 9 his choice of profession may change later...but i am learning a lot about the various options available..:idea.)

I as a parent, want to only tell them what are the available options. since my daughter draws well, i have told her she can pursue arts..but she right now is firm on CA. well, we have told her the pros and cons, the hardwork everything.....and now she is more determined...though she has 5 more years to make the choice...

There is tourism. look at law there is a wide scope. Agriculture. Textile, designing....

Thought engineering is at helm there is dearth for civil engineers.....will come back again...

    Dear shanvy,
Thanks for ur feedback. As u said management courses are becoming popular, just technical knowledge alone cannot help.Because an engineering graduate will be offered a job on coding. But in due course he will be promoted to project leader, manager for which he must definitely be aware managerial capabilities.

Glad that u found seismic engineering, though in due course his interests may or may not change So we must take steps to know what the child is opting for and finally channelise and guide him to excel in that field.

Though there is a boom in certain specialisations, still there are fields like civil, electronics which are evergreen.

Thank u once again for ur reply.

    Hi Bhargavi,
You have posed a very pertinent question. There are many other options though many parents do not want to take a look at it at all.
There are so many courses that I can think of Journalism, Web designing, Fine Arts, Law, Management courses, commercial pilot training, navy ,army not to forget the ever so popular IT , Banking. Why does nobody look to these courses these days?? But the kind of pressure that many undergo makes them decide only on tese two. I have always wondered why???You cannot force the kid tto do soemthing that he/she does not want to do. All thru their life they are bound to blame you for it. As far as I know many pot for this as it is prestigious to say that you child is a doc or an engineer. After they finish they inavariably go abroad to study though they it no dearth of institutions in India.
Look at other options that are on the increase is my thought.

Excellent and timely topic! I am at a loss to explain why people are so focused on becoming software engineers nowadays - what happened to the other fields -every economy is dependent on the growth in every field - not just in one or two specialized fields. I have been hearing reports that in India, Civil, Mechanical and other courses are hardly being taken by students now. Sure, the computer folks are paid a lot - so, the attraction is there - but can a majority of students be interested in that - or is society dictating this?

Shanthi - so glad to read that your son is interested in seismic engineering - my husband is a civil and structural engineer and has specialized in designing in areas of high seismic activity. Anytime your son has a question, let me know - I am sure my husband will be happy to answer any of his questions.

I believe that children should atleast have a opportunity to think through what they would like to do - and not be forced to make that decision very early. My daughter has started college but she is not sure what she wants to be - she is leaning towards law school but we are not sure if that is what she will end up doing. But I want her to think about this and go accordingly - I want her to follow her passion. Some kids know what they want early on - but many do not. We, as parents must listen to them and be supportive.

    hi shobana,

Thanks a ton. and nice to know about your DH. DS fascination comes from the mountains and hills in muscat.most of them are from volcanic acitivities..and there is a hot water spring where the water bubbles at the surface because of the activity inside...have to wait and see whether he is going to stay firm in his idea....as he is still 9.

as you said, my daughter has firmed and decided that she wants to do CA, she is in her 7th std. so we have as of now, keeping track of how to guide her..with CBSE offering financial accounting along with the other streams may be it will not be so tuff after all...
