Hi, I have taken Down Syndrom test. It is a small procedure of about 10 minutes. This test, performed between 16 and 20 weeks of pregnancy, involves the removal of a small amount of amniotic fluid through a needle inserted in the abdomen. I didn't feel any pain at all, a very minor tingling feeling but wasn't anything otherwise. The doctors are very expert and they carefully do that procedure while watching the baby position on the ultrasound.

I can totally understand your concern, I was very scared to go through that procedure as it has little complication, I Was feeling so overwhelmed. But learning as much as can helps alleviate some of fears. Side effects to the mother include cramping, bleeding, infection and leaking of amniotic fluid afterwards. There is a slight increase in the risk of miscarriage of 1/2 to 1%. I had very slight cramping like normal periods day for few hours after that It was normal. All I would suggest you just stay in the bed for 24 hours and do not move around much so you can relax your body and mind. No sex for one week is suggested.

May I ask you, if this is your first or second child?

Don't worry everything will be fine. Just pray to god and leave all your concerns to him. I wish you a good luck, hopefully the test will come negative, my prayers are with you and your unborn baby. May god bless your baby healthy and long life.

I'm also having appointment for down syndrome test. Some of my colleagues told me down syndrome test is-deep ultra sound + blood test.

If they find something wrong then only they take fluid from inside. Is it true?? Anybody know anything abt it.

    Hi
Yes it is true .IF your blood test is abnormal than only they take fluid from inside which is called AMNIOCENTESIS TEST.And the blood test is very simple they will prick your finger and take blood sample from it.Hope this info is helpful.

    Hi Cher

Hope you have a safe and healthy pregnancy. Your question regarding the Aminocentsis. link posted for more information...

    Amniocentesis : American Pregnancy Association

I myself have taken the aminocentsis test. Dr. will give you some kind of anesthesia on your stomach before they poke the needle inside your tummy to collect the fluid from your aminotic. Your stomach muscles will be numb and you won't feel any pain just a minor tingling sensation. Its only 5-10 minutes procedure. They watch baby movement on the ultrasound monitor very carefully. Miscarriage percentage is only 1/2 or 1%. So, its not risky much if you look at the percentage ratio. You probably get cramps feeling for few hours. Take bed rest for 24 hours completly. Do not carry any heavy stuff at all for few days. No sex for two weeks after that. So these are the basic precautions you can take. If you are still worried of miscarriage or you want to keep the child in any case. Why go through all this, you can say no to this procedure. Good luck with your baby. Take care.

    Re: Down syndrome

    hi skavi!<br>
not a problem... actually in US i think they will do all these amnio and all if the mother is in 30's .... anyway... i went to amnio last month though am not in 30 coz they did the nuchal translucent ultrasound and the bloodwork and calculated the risk ratio and suggested me to take amnio.. everything went fine and the results are normal.
    bye
